Month of Hair Masques: Vinegar & Gelatin

month of masques: gelatin and vinegar

How was your weekend? Mine was super fast, but fun. I attended 99x's Mockapalooza (90s Alternative cover bands concert), chilled & grilled at the pool, and strolled along the market in Piedmont Park (outfit for that tomorrow). While I had fun, being in the sun so much was not as fun for my hair (if my hair could talk, that is). In the summer I tend to wash my hair a lot more and every little bit of pampering helps. For this week's hair masque, I again sought out Google for unusual ingredients (that's what this series is for, after all). This recipe is particularly useful for dry, brittle hair.

Simply mix
  • 2 tbsp. unflavored gelatin
  • 1 cup hot water (to dissolve gelatin)
  • 1 cup cold water (to dilute vinegar)
  • 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
Directions
  • Wash hair.
  • While wet, apply mixture to hair (I assembled my masque before I shampooed my hair & applied it in the shower). Really work it into your hair.
  • Leave on 15 minutes.
  • Rinse out.
  • Reshampoo & condition as usual.
How Did It Work?
Yes! Even though the gelatin was rather goopy, the masque worked like a charm. My hair was very soft and I was surprised that it worked.

Would I Try This Again? What Would I Change?
Why not? I already have the box of gelatin. I was worried the unflavored gelatin would be hard to find, but it wasn't (PLUS, I've got another us for it coming soon!). Next time, I would just wet my hair since I'm going to shampoo it anyway. I might add more gelatin & avc since my hair is long & thick. I didn't smell the vinegar either, yay!
PS--It's 2 years today that I moved to Atlanta, yay again!

  3. I love all your beauty tips, I would have never thought to use gelatin, but then again, we drink collagen for our skin here so... anything is possible if it works, right?

  4. Makes sense to use gelatin since so many conditioners have silicone. This should be gentler on the hair. Can't wait to try it

  5. I'm on the "no 'poo" thing, and so my hair is rinsed every week with diluted ACV. It does work out quite nicely.
