Every now and again I like to add a bit of sparkle to my regular beauty routine, and summer is the perfect time to do so. However, since I'm too old to rock the glitter look on my face, I thought I’d share ways to get the shimmer look yourself, from the very subtle shimmer to the glittery bronzed goddess. And most of these will use products you already have (or can acquire cheaply)! Read on:
*
No matter your beauty routine, you can shimmer. Start with your skin. Try Sally Hansen Leg Makeup (last seen here) on your legs or Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisture on legs and arms. Shimmer Scale: 1 disco ball {my nails, Opi in Lost Without GPS and NYC in 130A}
{I did these too! Pic via cupcakesandcashmere}
Non-makeup wearer? Skip the shimmer on your face and put it on your nails. Simply paint your nails (pedis are fine for the very shimmer-shy) whatever color you choose and let dry. Next, pick a nail, any nail—for example the nail on the ring finger. Coat that nail in clear polish, dip into glitter, and let dry. OTHER OPTIONS: Paint the chosen nail using glittery polish (I’d suggest the same or complementary shade--see above or just paint them all glittery if you're feeling ultra shimmery). Is it still tooooooo much shimmer? Using clear polish, paint a horizontal stripe at the top of the nail, and dip into glitter. SHIMMER SCALE: 1 disco ball

For that just a bit of shimmer on the face, complete makeup and apply about a pea-sized amount of Vaseline or Aloe Vera to the apples of your cheeks. It will give you that dewy look. You can also mix the Vaseline with your foundation and apply all over, but be wary of looking too dewy! OTHER OPTIONS: Is your face too oily? Dot and rub in Benefit’s Moonbeam on cheeks, bridge of nose, & forehead instead or with a blush brush apply Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick on cheeks. SHIMMER SCALE: 1-2 disco balls

To add some glitter to the eyes, get the ELF Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil in Boldly Bronzed or Precious Pink ($1 & there’s a sharpener in the cap!) and apply to upper eyelid or outer corner of eyes. Blend. SHIMMER SCALE: 2 disco balls

Let’s step up the shimmer a bit for this next option by adding some sparkle to your eyes, cheeks, and lips. After applying concealer and foundation/tinted moisturizer, get out your Urban Decay Naked Palette (one of my best makeup purchases EVER). Brush on Sin all over lid. Next, brush Sidecar on outer half of lid & blend. Smog should be in the crease & blend it all well. Complete the look with brown eyeliner and mascara. Next, dot on ELF All Over Stick on your cheeks, bridge of nose, and forehead. Rub in well. Finally, use a shimmery lip gloss--sometimes I use the All Over Stick as a lip stick base and the gloss on top. If you're interested in a tutorial of this, let me know in the comments & I'll make one! OTHER OPTIONS: Use Maybelline Sunlit Bronze Eye Shadow Quad instead or the Shimmer Stick (pick 3 shades and blend well) on your eyes. A shimmery bronzer, which most of us already own, is another option for the face. Skip the shimmer on the cheeks if you use this option. SHIMMER SCALE: 5
Remember, keep this look light. Try to use gold and pink shimmery colors for summer and save the dark glitter for disco night.

I prefer shimmer on my nails only as my eyes tend to look ghostly with shimmery eye shadow.
