Each month I attempt a different resolution,
in the hopes that the resolutions will last longer than a month.
See past resolutions here.
For September, my resolution was to read every day. .
Grade: A+
Notes: I promised I would read some of a book every day. And not just mags, either! In total, I read 23 books (and my usual magazines too). I admit, some of the books were style or beauty books, and I could read a couple of those in a day. To help, I kept a book or two on hand, and used my time wisely.
Would I do this again? Sure, but I felt like I was back in college, and trying to cram in reading. I really put pressure on myself to read a lot. Therefore, I also found that my blog posts suffered a bit, since I used most of my spare time reading books and responding to blog comments.
For October, I am stepping out of my comfort zone and saying YES to every opportunity. I tend to be quite a wallflower (unless a microphone is involved), and will just do a little laugh and whisper "no" to many things in life. It's my Birthday month, and it's about dang time I started doing living it up.
I'm leaving this up to fate, and letting things happen organically, instead of planning a list of things to do.
AND since it's my birthday month (& I got away so easy last month) I'm doing a bonus resolution: accept compliments. I'm horrible at this, are you? I always think the compliment is an ulterior motive for something else. Or sometimes I just don't believe them. But this month, that's all changing!
Let's see where life takes me this month...
Take a moment to enter my Design Sponge giveaway. It ends on the 18th!
Good luck! I think it's a great idea, it's a lot easier to track than one at the start of the year. x hivenn
ReplyDeletehorray for birthdays!! and what a great resolution! :) xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteGreat resolutions! And you seem diligent enough to make them real. I admire that.
ReplyDeleteTo me, this is the best time for resolutions! Better than at the beginning of the year! <3<3
ReplyDeleteawww that's great to hear you met all your resolutions!! you go girl! :)
ReplyDeleteWow that's a lot of reading! Well done! And glad that you're adding accept compliments to the list. That's a hard one. I used to be horrible about that but have finally learned to do it. My inclination still is to protest but I catch myself :)
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous Monday! xoxo
Good luck with your resolutions!
ReplyDeleteIt truly baffles me that some people have trouble accepting compliments, your perspective provided a little more insight!
That should be my resolution too...haha...but a lot of the opportunities I say no to is because I have to work...

ReplyDeleteoooh this is a great idea. I love reading, so the reading everyday would be easy for me. But accepting compliments? hahaha. That's genius! You're entitled to it, so hey, take advantage!

Way to go! I love your October resolution, too!
ReplyDeleteI started trying to focus on being more gracious about accepting compliments when I realized how annoying it was to compliment other people and get the "this old thing?" kind of reaction. Then I noticed I did the same thing! Now I try to just say thank you very genuinely and I share a little bit about where I got it or why I like it or just something about whatever is being complimented. So, it turns the compliment into more of a conversation :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome job, darling!

I love the commitment to say YES to every opportunity. After a particular bad breakup, I tried something similar. It got me back into the swing of things so fast, and I also met some amazing people along the way!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I can't believe you read that many books, crazy!! I'm looking forward to seeing how this month's goes. Happy birthday month btw! I'm a new follower :)
ReplyDeletewhat great resolutions! i love the taking compliments one...everyone should learn to do that! best of luck to you!!

You read 23 books in one month? Yowza. i consider myself a reader, but I think I'd read that in three months! One day, I will be a fast reader. (Not today, though.)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea and such a great resolution. I should do something like this because I'm not much of a reader. I loved it! Thanks for sharing.

is good to set resolutions :)
ReplyDeleteI really like this - resolutions shouldn't just be for once a year. I don't like receiving compliments - it makes me feel like I'm being judged
ReplyDeleteI'm so bad with compliments...so bad! Your birthday month is the perfect one to do this in! Yay for October birthday buddies!
ReplyDeleteElle what style books have you been reading I would love to read some new ones.
ReplyDeleteI never pegged you as a wallflower Elle I love learning new things about my fellow bloggers.
You are a great writer Elle and I love your style ( there are no motives behind this compliment) :)

ReplyDeleteI'm the same with compliments. Never know what to say.
ReplyDeleteWonderful resolutions...you have inspired me.
ReplyDeletegood for you! I need to work more on reading as well. I used to as kid and in high school but I never seem to the have the time to in college!
ReplyDeleteI'm so inspired by your monthly resolutions. It reminds me of the book I'm reading happiness project. You go girl!! I'm need to start the same.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday month! Those are great resolutions. I know what you mean about taking compliments; I'm bad at getting them. But then I remember how awkward it is when I compliment someone and they deflect it. So I just shut up, smile and say, "thank you." :)

wow. 23 books. I haven't finished a book since 2007 when I started blogging, lol. Nice job! Also... the saying yes to every opportunity is pretty fantastic. I find I say yes more than NO now and it's a much better life. I am however, in a much better place than I once was. Good luck, you can do it :) And Happy Birth-month!
ReplyDelete23 books in 4 weeks is AMAZING!
ReplyDeletegreat to know that you achieved your goals for these past months... hope it's a great month to celebrate the B-Day too!
ReplyDeleteI say: Good for you! It's great to be reporting in too, as I'm sure it helps keep you motivated. I'm impressed and inspired!
ReplyDeleteGood for you!!! I am so impressed you are sticking with your resolutions!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great Monday!! Xoxo, Stephanie @ Blonde Highlights
Good luck this month! Back in 2008, I made it my Summer of Yes. I said yes to pretty much every opportunity that came my way. Believe it or not, that's the main reason I went on date with The Boyfriend. Three years later, it was the best "yes" moment of my life. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, you read 23 books! That is fantastic (and they all count, even the beauty books).
ReplyDeleteI hope a lot of great opportunities come your way this month.

ReplyDeleteand yes--it's your birthday month so take it to the edge. in my birthday month i always seem to be a bit more daring. werk it!!

awesome ideas!!! I love the plan to do it every month. I am horrible at accepting compliments most of the time too, it should be so easy but I always feels so inclined to explain that I got something on sale... WHHHHY! Happy Birthday Month!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your resolution to read! That's awesome! Also Happy Early Birthday-and I am bad at accepting compliments as well! Although flattering, they make me feel a little embarrassed.

Happy Birthday Month! Do you know what is sad? I'm bad at receiving compliments because they make me uncomfortable, so I rarely hand them out too because I don't want to make people uncomfortable. What sort of psychological crap is that?
