DIY: Holiday-Flavored Pout Plumpers

About this time of year, some of us get the DIY bug--that THIS year we are doing HOMEMADE GIFTS for EVERYONE. That thought usually lasts about 5 minutes once you realize all the time/money/people you need to make gifts for/attention span (wait, that's just me). Well, I have a solution for you. Here's an easy, cheap, and quick DIY that makes a cute stocking stuffer (or a gift for yourself because you were so good this year). I made these Holiday-Flavored Pout Plumpers in the flavors of Cinnamon Bun and Candy Cane. And I made some labels to print out. Enjoy!

You'll need:

  • Extract/flavoring (I used vanilla, mint, and cinnamon)
  • Plain chapstick (I got 4 for $1)
  • Microwave
  • Microwavable measuring glass/cup
  • Toothpicks
  • Small funnel
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Pot holders/towel (optional)
Method:
  • Roll chapstick all the way to the top.
  • Take from base and put into microwavable measuring cup.
  • Roll the empty tube back to the base--this is important.
  • With toothpick, cut the chapstick into smaller pieces.
  • Place chapstick-filled measuring cup into microwave for 1 minute.
  • Carefully remove and stir/cut/chop/smile at the chapstick and put back into microwave for another minute/minute and a half.
  • Once completely liquefied, remove from microwave and add 5 drops of desired flavor.
  • For the Candy Cane flavor, I also added 2 drops of red food coloring. For the Cinnamon Bun, I did 5 drops of cinnamon and 2 of vanilla.
  • Stir.
  • The liquid will start to solidify, so pop back into the microwave for a few seconds to melt again. Use a pot holder/towel if the cup is too hot.
  • Pour the mixture into the funnel, which will fill up the tube.
  • Remove funnel once filled and let cool. Resist urge to try your DIY.
  • Pop the top on, print out the label onto label paper, and attach to tube. Tie some curling ribbon, put in a cute bag, stuff in a stocking or my purse, etc.
Candy Cane (mint + red food coloring) and Cinnamon Buns (cinnamon + vanilla)

Labels:

Tips:
  • Make sure you roll the empty tube back down before pouring the hot mixture!
  • You can use a spoon and a bowl, but I've found pouring & wax removal easier by using toothpicks and a measuring cup.
  • The liquid solidifies fast, so you have to work fast...but that's a good thing, making this a 5- MINUTE DIY (yeah!).
  • Don't fret if there's leftover wax in the cup/bowl. You will have to lose a smidge of the wax to make space for the flavoring.
  • No funnel? Make your own from paper.
  • Natural beeswax can be used as well--I just found the process easier & cheaper by buying the chapstick.
  • The mint and cinnamon temporarily plump lips by aggravating the top layer of skin, so be warned if you/whomever are allergic to those flavors.
  • Not a fan of those flavors? Use whatever flavors you'd like--I used these because they (a) remind me of the holidays (b) plump my lips.
  • Need another idea? I used the same process to make solid perfume. Check it out here.

Outfit of the Week: Neapolitan

Outfit of the Week: Neapolitan

When & What: This is what I wore for Thanksgiving, and it was influenced by an eye shadow palette. Seriously! And it made me think of Neapolitan ice cream, hence the outfit title.

Where: I always drive 5 hours with pup in tow, to my Mom's house, and usually the weather is hot. Ah, South Georgia. But this Thanksgiving was different: the weather was in the low 60s, and we didn't eat a Mom's, but at near a pond (see pics below) in the middle of nowhere. It was a nice change and just so peaceful.
Guest Mill Pond, Homerville, GA

The rest of my weekend was celebrating Nephew #1's 3rd birthday and doing some online shopping. My step-dad and I usually venture out to the Black Friday sales, but stayed in and watched all the college football games we could!

Heard: Chinese by Lily Allen on Grooveshark
Chinese, Lily Allen. I've written before about my synesthesia, and when I hear this song, it sounds pink and dreamy, kinda like the neapolitan colors in my outfit. And the song's about her mom, and I'm thankful for  my Mom!

Wore:
  • I have this soft pink cardi (mine was from Old Navy on clearance, for about $5), which was perfect for sitting by the pond.
  • Underneath I wore a brown tee, again from Old Navy $5.
  • We keep our Thanksgivings casual, and jeans are just about required.
  • To complete the look, I added a necklace, boots (H&M for $31), and soft eye makeup from this Wet N' Wild palette.
What did you wear? Post links below!

Cheap Treats: The Perfect Holiday Polish (N.Y.C. in Chelsea)

When do you start decorating for the holidays? Is the tree up before the turkey's cold? I make myself wait until a couple of days after Thanksgiving. I like to decorate my nails too! With all of those holiday parties, and I think I've found the perfect polish. It's an excellent choice when you want more than just regular red, but don't want all that glitter. It has just a bit of shimmer that shines when the lights hit.
For this week's Cheap Treat, I'm sharing N.Y.C. In a New York Minute Quick Dry Polish in Chelsea. It's around $2, dries fast, and is a much cheaper alternative to other polishes, like OPI's You Rock--Apulco Red. Here's an EXTREME CLOSEUP (woo!):
It's a candy apple red with a subtle shimmer and it only needs two coats. With clear coat (not pictured), it's  chip-free for at least a week or two. I just adore it!

What polishes do you wear for the holidays?

Cheap Treats: Biotin

Me, wearing Hot For Chocolate by Revlon, and holding this bottle intently.

Thanks for visiting my blog! Often I feature Cheap Treats; products I love that are fewer than $10.
Please stay awhile--ElleSees features beauty tips, tricks, and tutorials. Enjoy!

How was your Thanksgiving? I'm still stuffed and still visiting with family. Speaking of family, this week's Cheap Treat comes from a family request from earlier this year--my mom and sisters have gorgeous curly, fine hair (brown, blonde, and red, respectively). I have dark brown, wavy, wiry, thick hair. Anyway, my Mom and Lil Sis asked if I knew any tricks to get their hair to grow and I had a few. Our hair changes due to stress, age, etc, and I had a period of time where my hair seemed to be shedding more than usual. There are several tricks I used, and one I swear by is Biotin--it really works and is around $2.99+ a bottle. Your hair will grow! But, as many commenters have reminded me, ALL of your hair grows, not just the hair on your head. I saw no difference in my complexion, since I've never had acne, but others have commented that Biotin made acne worse/caused acne.

How much to take?
Between 1000-5000 mcg per day. The bottle above is 5000 micrograms, so take just one capsule. The brand used here is Spring Valley, and is from Walmart.

Can you take this with daily vitamins? Can I take if pregnant?
I did; however, I am NOT a Dr/qualified to give medical advice, so check with your Dr first. I've never been pregnant, so check with your Dr. once again.

Have you tried this?

Outfit of the Week: Autumn Song

Outfit of the Week: autumn song

Sound: Autumn Song Autumn Song by Manic Street Preachers on Grooveshark
When: Tuesday or Wednesday
Where: Dinner with friends
What I Wore:
  • How was your weekend? Mine was great--my Lil Sis is here (!!!) and I wrote one of my fave posts ever--scroll down to see my latest tutorial. But back to the outfit, I wore this comfy, casual outfit out to dinner with friends, and since I'm hanging with my sis, this post will be short. Sidenote: I've gotten food poisoning for the 4th time since June, so I'm giving up red meat for a bit. Ok, but seriously back to the outfit.
  • I wore a white tee with a khaki button up shirt, since the weather was a little cool. Sidenote again: it was 50 on Saturday and is 75 today. Hmph.
  • I also wore some comfy, ripped up old jeans and brown boots. I kinda felt like I was in a modern safari or something. Sidenote: I'm scared of most animals, so I doubt I'd ever be on a safari, but still...
  • To top it off, I wore a green scarf (last seen here and here), a brown smokey eye, wavy hair, and a berry lip.
What's an outfit you wore lately (casual or dressy)?

How To: Scarlet Johansson Eye Look For D&G

I've seen this Scarlet Johansson ad for a few months now and when it appeared on the back of this month's ELLE, I knew I had to recreate it. This dramatic eye look goes perfectly with a fancy dress and a fun evening--think holiday parties. It would even look especially darling with a black cashmere turtleneck sweater, jeans, and leopard flats! Let's see how I did it:

TOOLS:
  • ELF Liquid Eyeliner ($1)
  • Wet N Wild eyeshadow palette in Sweet as Candy ($3)
  • L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara ($5)
EXTRAS:
  • ELF C Brush ($3)
  • Crease Brush ($1)
  • Eye Makeup & Q-Tips
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in French Fries ($4.49)
  • Eyelash curler
  • Plain or cherry chapstick
METHOD:
  1. This is optional, but for a longer-lasting color, apply the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil on the lid as a base. Be sure to rub in.
  2. Using the C brush (or finger), pat the pink shade from the Sweet as Candy palette all over the lid.
  3. With the crease brush, brush the pink shade just like eyeliner under the bottom lashes to smoke out the color.
  4. Pat a finger in the white shade and pat it on the lid right over the eyeball (in other words, the center of the lid).
  5. Using the crease brush, dip in the brown shade and sweep over the crease in a windshield wiper motion.
  6. Wipe off the crease brush and get a little of the white shade. Blow off the excess and sweep under the brows for a subtle highlight.
  7. Curl lashes and apply mascara
  8. My eyes are a bit rounder than Scarlet's, so I applied my liner from the inner corner to the outer corner and made my liner thicker--this is to make them appear a bit more almond-shaped, like hers. If your eyes are almond-shaped, start applying the liner from the where the iris begins.
  9. Drag the liner to the end. To create the wing, pretend you're drawing up the meet the tip of your eyebrow. For more help, see my tutorial I did with gel liner and here is Lauren Conrad's liquid liner tutorial. Use Q-tips dipped in eye makeup remover to get stray marks or to start over. The more practice, the better and easier it gets.
  10. Optional: fill in brows to make them thicker like Scarlet's. Also optional: for even more shine, rub some chapstick over lids.

What eye looks are you going to wear this holiday season?
Have a great weekend! Be safe, behave, and be well. Love, Elle

How To: November Nails

It's Thursday (woot, woot!) and I thought I'd share some nail ideas perfect for autumn, Thanksgiving, a random Saturday at 3 pm, whatevs. And think how impressed Grandma will be at Thanksgiving when you pass her the cranberry sauce (fact: I love cranberry sauce). Now while I wouldn't suggest all of these at once, I would suggest having fun and mixin' up the mani. Here's what you'll need:

  • Tape
  • Decorative scissors
  • NYC polish in Lincoln Center $1.99
  • ELF polish in Black $1
  • Not pictured: clear polish, black crackle polish, patience
(Nails 1-5, pinkie to thumb)
  1. For the crackle nail, paint 1 coat of Lincoln Park, let dry, and paint a thin coat of crackle on top.
  2. For the stripes, paint nails in Lincoln Park, let dry, and paint a clear coat. Cut 2 thin strips of tape and place over nails. Paint black over exposed nail. Remove tape and add a clear coat.
  3. For the scalloped nails, paint nails in LP, let dry, and add a clear coat. Using decorative scissors, cut a thin strip and place on nail. Pick a side and paint that side black. Once dry, remove tape and add a clear coat.
  4. The reverse half-moon has the LP coat, clear coat, and a piece of tape cut in a crescent shape over the bottom part of the nail. Paint the exposed section black. Let dry, remove, and add a clear coat.
  5. For the reverse French, paint the nail black, let dry, add a clear coat, and place a piece of tape on the nail to leave just the tip exposed. Paint the exposed bit in Lincoln Park. Let dry, remove tape, and add a clear coat.
Tips
  • Be patient. Wait until the nail fully dries before removing the tape.
  • While I love a quick-drying nail spray (like Pam oil...it works!) avoid that for this nail. It could make the tape slide.
  • Adding the clear coat before placing the tape will help with the color not peeling off. And so does no humidity--I tried this back in August and the paint peeled every time.
  • Try making the piece of tape smaller, so there's less sticking to your nail.
  • The thinner the paint job the better.
  • If you have a nail art pen, it could easily help with touch ups.
  • Paper page protectors make the reverse nails much easier, but I chose to work with what I had.
  • I used greige and black, but use whatever autumnal (or any) colors you'd like. Enjoy!
What color(s) is/are on your nails right now? Toes?

The Dessert giveaway is almost over!
TWO winners will have a dessert shipped to them (or loved one).

12 Months of Resolutions: November (And October Revisited)

Every month I've been doing a different resolution in the hopes that they'll stick.
Some have been really successful, and some deserve a second (or third) chance.
See past resolutions here.

October was my self-proclaimed Birthday Month, and I wanted to really step out of my comfort zone and say YES to everything that came my way. How'd I do?

Grade: B+
Notes: Although I ramble on here, I'm really shy until you get to know me. But the shyness really holds me back from opportunities sometimes, and this month I wanted to change that. While not nearly enough opportunities came for me to say YES to, I did a few things that are unlike me. Here are some of the things I did:
  • Jumped into a parade
  • Sang karaoke in front of a crowd on my birthday
  • Crashed a wedding*
  • Posted pics of myself on the blog
*When I was in Philly, I totally crashed a wedding for about a minute. The wedding was in my hotel, a black-tie affair. I was in a sweater and jeans but grabbed a mustache on a stick and waltzed right in...and then shortly waltzed right out. On the plane home, the guy next to me was at the wedding! Luckily he didn't see me. ;)

Would I do this again?
Yes! I am still struggling with seeing myself on the blog. I'm definitely not a style blogger, and this isn't a style blog, although I pretend to play one on Tuesdays! I was disappointed for not posting more of me, but as each week goes by, I get a little more confident. And I'm trying to accept compliments too.

For November, I'm listing and sharing my thankfulness every single day. Even on our darkest days, we are truly, truly lucky and have every reason to be thankful.

What's something you did to step out of your comfort zone?

There will be TWO winners!

Outfit of the Week: A Little Grey, A Little Black

Outfit of the Week: A Little Grey, A Little Black

I totally enjoyed the past two weekends of nothingness after having a busy summer and anticipating a busy holiday season ahead. I did, however, venture out for groceries and a much-needed root touch up and trim. I was so nervous because I was going to a new stylist. My hair is so hard to cut correctly in layers, and thankfully, it all turned out wonderfully. So here's what I wore to get my hair cut--again with grey and again another outfit getting my hair cut. So?

Song: I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You--Colin Hay I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You by Colin Hay on Grooveshark

When: Friday
Where: Paragon Salon
What I Wore:

  • It was deliciously brisk outside. Of course, as I type this, it's now 74. Hmph. But let me relieve that brief windy weather. I started off with a grey sweater, to match the cool weather and the sadness of this song.
  • Next, came the omnipresent black skinnies, and it was decided I was only wearing two colors.
  • Since it was cold, and I will use just about any excuse to wear a scarf (even getting the mail. TRUE STORY!), I wore this black and grey bird scarf. I don't remember where I got it, but it looks similar to the one above...just grey birds. The only other accessory I wore was my watch; I fail to mention it but it's always there.
  • I will also wear boots for any reason, and these grey boots were just right.
  • For beauty, I curled my hair with a flat iron, wore the faintest aubergine smokey eye, and a nude lip. It somehow all worked together.
Me, in pieces, before haircut/color and anxiety attacks

Do you ever wear just 2 colors? One color?
Do you have anxiety attacks about seeing yourself on the Internet?
What about a new hair stylist?

Cheap Treats: Revlon Lip Butters

Weekly I feature Cheap Treats; products I love that are fewer than $10. Enjoy!

How was your weekend? What fun did you get into? I didn't do much, but stopped by CVS to check out the latest beauty products--drugstores always have the newest stuff first! As soon as I walked in, I saw the display for Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butters, and had to check them out. They are AMAZING!

The Lip Butters feel just like a lip balm but smoother, silkier, and with lots of color. Speaking of color, they come in 20 shades and the names remind me of sugary goodies: Red Velvet, Sugar Frosting, and Berry Smoothie. I picked up the latter, and love the berry color--perfect for fall/winter. I like how I can build the color too. They don't feel sticky like a lip gloss, just smooth and well, buttery. In fact, they kind of remind me of MAC's Sheen Supreme lipsticks, with the shape and texture of the lipstick, but at half the price. Right now the Lip Butters are selling for $7.49 (I used a coupon and got mine for fewer $). My only complaints? With names like Red Velvet, Sugar Frosting, etc, I was hoping for a sugary taste. There's no taste to these lipsticks, which might appeal to some. My other complaint? I WANT THEM ALL!

What cheap treats are you loving lately?

How To: Day/Night Eyes Featuring Too Faced/Rue 21 Natural Palette

Day to Night

Last month, I shared a Cheap Treat dupe, the Rue 21 Natural Palette that looks like the Too Faced Natural Palette. I had requests for a natural, neutral look and a more dramatic look. I decided to combine the two into a Day/Night mini tutorial. The top picture is the Too Faced and the one beneath is Rue 21's version. The Rue 21 shades aren't labeled, so remember each number corresponds with each shade.  Let's start with the DAY look:

  1. First, I put a primer on my lids. Next, I patted Silk Teddy all over my lid (largest shade on Innocent section).
  2. Push Up was brushed into my crease (far right Innocent section).
  3. I dabbed Sexpresso (worst name ever) into my outer corner and very lightly blended into my crease (middle shade of Innocent).
  4. In the inner corner of my eyes and underneath my eyebrows, I brushed Heaven (largest shade Instinctive).
  5. I added brown eyeliner and 1 coat of mascara. This look can be recreated with the UD Naked palette too. Need less of a DAY look? Complete the look using the top row of the palettes.
And now for NIGHT:

  1. For NIGHT, I rubbed NYX Jumbo Pencil in French Fries (last seen here) all over my lid as a primer. It's a brown/bronze color. Next, I patted Nude Beach all over my lid (largest pan on Excited).
  2. My crease had the shade Push Up (right shade in Innocent).
  3. Into the outer corner I tapped Cocoa Puff (middle shade in Excited) and lightly blended into crease.
  4. The inner corners of my eyes, as well as underneath my brows, have the shade Honey Pot (bottom right shade in Excited).
  5. I used liquid black eyeliner and 2 coats of mascara. I smudged Cocoa Puff underneath my bottom lashes. This look can be recreated with UD Naked palette. Note: the Rue 21 does have fall out, especially with the glitter shades. Need more of a NIGHT look? Use the bottom shades of the palette instead.
Are you into a neutral or more dramatic eye look?

How To: Katie Holmes' Curly Side Pony

This post is a Reader Request! Tina, from FL Girl With a New Life, asked for an easy hairstyle for an upcoming wedding she was going to be in. Inspired by the picture above (think Brigette Bardot and the 60s), is the curly side pony. This hair style takes 5 minutes to do once hair is curled. Let's get started:

Tools:
  • heat protectant
  • curling iron/wand (bigger wand=bigger curls...use what you have/prefer)
  • hair spray
  • brush or comb
  • For volume, use a volumizing hair spray or dry shampoo or volumizing powder
  • bobby pins
  • hair elastic--preferably clear or close to hair color

Method:
  • After heat protectant has been applied, curl hair. I used a curling wand for mine.
  • Part hair on the side.

Gather hair around crown and begin taking sections from the crown--leave bangs/fringe alone.
  • Spray 1 in section with hairspray (or volumizing product) at roots. Back comb/tease with comb or brush for volume.
  • Repeat all over crown.
  • Gather teased crown sections again, pouf and pin, like in the Katie Holmes' pic above.
  • Gently smooth hair with brush and hairspray.
  • Move remaining hair to opposite side of parted hair.
  • Secure in loose pony right under ear.
  • Slightly pouf bangs/fringe if needed.
  • Separate wisps of hair and curl, if desired.
  • Spray and you're done!
Tips:
  • My interpretation is smoother and sleeker than Katie Holmes' as my look is for a wedding. However, to get her exact look, brush out and tease your curls a bit. Next, put a little mousse in your hands and scrunch your curls.
  • To hide your hair elastic, wrap a piece of hair around the elastic and pin.
  • To keep curls from falling (after completing the teasing, pinning, and pony) roll and pin each curl until ready.
  • Too many flyaways? Spray hairspray onto a toothbrush to gently brush hair back into place.
  • This hair style is very versatile--try just the pouf pinned back like this style. Or turn the pony into a fishtail braid. Or try waves instead of curls. Or slick back bangs and leave hair straight. Or braid bangs and pin Or part your hair down the middle and curling bangs on each side.
What's your favorite hairstyle?
Reader request? Let me know in the comments!
Eye makeup tutorial coming tomorrow.

Smitten.

You've seen the Lust List--things that I want. Now, check out what has me Smitten--things that I have and love. This month's Smitten is the Birthday Edition. I am very blessed! Enjoy.
My Missoni Espresso Set--this was the ONE thing I wanted and didn't get from that whole Target hoopla. Luckily, my bestie got me one and managed to keep it a secret until my bday! Look at the little spoons! I've been switching the order of the cups/saucers around and making everyone use them. "Oh, you want some water? HOW ABOUT IN A MISSIONI ESPRESSO CUP?"
I love carafes--I made my own here--and was thrilled to receive this one from Crate and Barrel. All that's missing is a bottle of wine. What gives, guys? Thanks, Leigh & the boys! And the pumpkin cookie jar is from my brother and his family.
This Remington Ceramic Curling Wand was on my Birthday Wishlist, and I LOVE it. Highly recommended and last seen here.
One of you lovely ladies pinned these on Pinterest, and for $14, these Kenneth Lane pearl earrings were mine! And the pumpkins were from my bosses--I collect them (Yes, I'm weird. What's new?)
As I mentioned in my Lust List, I love Russian Nesting Dolls, and this necklace is too cute and teeny. I believe it's from F21. I love mini things!
My Mom wanted me to have a reminder of my childhood to pass onto my own kids, so she tracked down my favorite doll as a kid. My pup Charlie keeps taking her and hiding her! It's Holly Hobbie's sister (I think), Carrie.

What have you been Smitten with lately?
