This post is a Reader Request! Tina, from FL Girl With a New Life, asked for an easy hairstyle for an upcoming wedding she was going to be in. Inspired by the picture above (think Brigette Bardot and the 60s), is the curly side pony. This hair style takes 5 minutes to do once hair is curled. Let's get started:
Tools:
- heat protectant
- curling iron/wand (bigger wand=bigger curls...use what you have/prefer)
- hair spray
- brush or comb
- For volume, use a volumizing hair spray or dry shampoo or volumizing powder
- bobby pins
- hair elastic--preferably clear or close to hair color
Method:
- After heat protectant has been applied, curl hair. I used a curling wand for mine.
- Part hair on the side.
Gather hair around crown and begin taking sections from the crown--leave bangs/fringe alone.
- Spray 1 in section with hairspray (or volumizing product) at roots. Back comb/tease with comb or brush for volume.
- Repeat all over crown.
- Gather teased crown sections again, pouf and pin, like in the Katie Holmes' pic above.
- Gently smooth hair with brush and hairspray.
- Move remaining hair to opposite side of parted hair.
- Secure in loose pony right under ear.
- Slightly pouf bangs/fringe if needed.
- Separate wisps of hair and curl, if desired.
- Spray and you're done!
Tips:
- My interpretation is smoother and sleeker than Katie Holmes' as my look is for a wedding. However, to get her exact look, brush out and tease your curls a bit. Next, put a little mousse in your hands and scrunch your curls.
- To hide your hair elastic, wrap a piece of hair around the elastic and pin.
- To keep curls from falling (after completing the teasing, pinning, and pony) roll and pin each curl until ready.
- Too many flyaways? Spray hairspray onto a toothbrush to gently brush hair back into place.
- This hair style is very versatile--try just the pouf pinned back like this style. Or turn the pony into a fishtail braid. Or try waves instead of curls. Or slick back bangs and leave hair straight. Or braid bangs and pin Or part your hair down the middle and curling bangs on each side.

PS Everything turned out wonderful. Since things were especially cold and windy the day of I opted to let the ends hang down instead of a pony(like in the Lauren Conrad alternative you linked to in the tips.) Confession: I had to practice this one a couple of times before I got it right--because I am a novice when it comes to curling wands and hair in general. In the end I got big compliments on my final look. *Thank you.*
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS!!! Your hair is so long and shiny! Katie Holmes looks realllly skinny. Photoshop?
