Scandinavian Style
I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. A capital many have never even heard of in a country many think itself is a capital of Sweden. At less than 6 million inhabitants, Denmark is one of the smallest countries in the world, yet a country full of opportunities and what some refer to – the happiest people in the world. Whether that’s true or not, we will not be discussing here, but what I’d like to share with you is a piece of Danish and Scandinavian style.
Simplicity is a virtue
When it comes to Danish style, simplicity is a virtue. The colors are kept earthy and the pieces are often under toned. At the same time, Danes are not afraid to stand out and the streets of Copenhagen often resemble runways with different types of people showcasing their quirky and different styles.
When it comes to the choice of clothing many Danes, and here I’m thinking of those who follow fashion, love mixing second hand finds with items from high street stores such as H&M and high end designers. Especially when it comes to classic items as watches, handbags, coats, sunglasses and shoes, Danes splurge on designer items.
There are many different aspects about Denmark and the Danish culture that have an impact on the way we dress. The climate being one of the biggest sinners. Denmark is cold and rainy and most of all windy and yet most of the inhabitants have the bicycle as their preferred way of getting around.
A staple in any Dane’s closet is knitwear- they keep us toasty, are great for layering which we love to practice and add to the effortlessly chic look, even in summer when worn with denim cut-offs, a simple top and Converse. Summers are, unfortunately, never too hot, which is why wearing a knit in June is not unheard of!
Danish/Scandinavian style is not high brow yet it’s still classy, it’s chic, yet understated - contradictions that work for us.
So there really is something about not taking fashion too seriously yet reaching that flair of chic effortlessness to get that look that many, that are the essence of Scandinavian style.
I hope to see you in Copenhagen!
