We all know to coat our skin in SPF products--not just in the summer, but all year and all types of weather. Done! Check!
But what about your hair?
The UVA and UVB rays damage hair, making hair weak, brittle, and prone to breakage. The sun also causes color fading.
Luckily, this problem can be easily fixed! Here's how:
- Look for products that have UVA/B protectants in them! Shampoos, sprays, and the like. Ouidad makes a great one.
- If you part your hair whilst at the beach/pool/lake, apply sunscreen along your part. If you've ever sunburnt your part, you know what I'm talking about! I've used non-menthol chapstick with SPF in a pinch.
- Coconut Oil--Not only will your hair feel moisturized (a little goes a long way however), you're protecting it as well!
- Deep Conditioner--Use this on wet or dry hair. Of course I'm going to recommend Aussie 3 Minute Miracle, but even regular or leave-in conditioner will work. When I'm at the beach, I'll coat my wet hair in this and keep my hair down. By the end of the day, I have gorgeous, natural, beachy waves. And I'm constantly asked what's in my hair to make it smell so good. It's the 3 Minute Miracle!
- Extra Virgin Olive/Jojoba Oil--Again, use on wet or dry hair. If putting oil on your hair isn't your thing, at least coat the ends. Shampoo & condition out, of course.
- Anything That Coats, Helps--While I wear my hair down, keep hair in a pony or bun to help limit sun exposure. I also use heat protectant before going into the sun.
- Keep It Covered--Not only does the hat keep your face sun-free, but it helps your hair, too. No hat? Use a scarf!
- I anticipate comments about why Moroccan/Argan Oil is not mentioned. While many consider it to be a must-have, it can actually dry out hair for some. That "some" would include me! My hair hates it. I wanted to share products that I know would work for everyone.

Elle, I finally got that haircut and chopped off those split ends. What a relief! I've got to try the coconut oil in my hair sometime. I still haven't done it yet

I learned the hard way about applying sunscreen along your part... I got a BAD scalp sunburn in Mexico a few years ago because I didn't do that.
ReplyDeleteThese are great tips! My hair is so fried this summer and I can't figure out why. I even just got a keratin treatment and the ends are still a little fuzzy. I got the Alterna stuff in my Birchbox and I have been loving it. Now I want to try olive oil and coconut oil too - I really think it will help! Thanks and happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh, how I needed to see this post!!
ReplyDeletegreat tips!! we are on day 12 of a heat wave...so this hair hasn't seen much sun: )
ReplyDeletethanks for helping us out with some tips on how to deal with the summer heat and our hair. definitely cover up, if you color, keep that color looking fresh and definitely moisturize, moisturize
ReplyDeleteI hat is a must. I've never sunburned my scalp before but my sister in law did and that did not look pleasant.
ReplyDeleteI've heard coconut oil a lot, but never tried. Maybe I should. :p
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I need these!
ReplyDeleteI actually use Argan oil on occasion--didn't know it could dry out hair. Mainly I stick to coconut oil or carrot oil; I use a deep conditioner once a week; and I usually keep my hair covered anyway. Although, the sun could lighten my hair, which could be cool since it's pretty much jet black.
ReplyDeleteDeep conditioning is so important. It makes a world of difference on my hair.

I still didn't get any of the 3 minute miracle! I forget everytime I go! I need to write it down because I want some.
ReplyDeleteMocha coconut is my favorite from Starbucks! Can't wait to check out the DIY!
ReplyDeleteI have some special hair sunscreen...I spray it on my roots then brush it through my hair while it's still wet...protects my scalp and hair. Favorite.
ReplyDeleteAussie 3 Minute Miracle is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWhen you say coconut oil, do you mean specifically for hair, or just the regular kind for cooking?
ReplyDeleteAlso, couldn't agree more about making sure to sunscreen your part. I learned that lesson the hard way on the 4th of July.
