How To: Hide a Pimple (Using Drugstore Products!)

Zit happens. And if you'd like to hide yours, here's how:

T O O L S:
  • Pimple treatment
  • green corrector (optional)
  • Small, pointed brush
  • foundation that matches your skin tone
  • large, fluufy shadow brush
  • translucent powder
M E T H O D:
  • Begin with a clean face. Use whatever pimple treatment you'd like on the zit. I used the Clean and Clear Persa-gel. Since I am covering my zit with makeup, I wanted to treat it first.
Dear Internets, meet my zit.. And embarrassment.
  • If you have a lot of redness, use a green corrector (I like stick or creamy formula best) to help tone down the redness. Take a teeny tiny amount and dab it on the red areas. Pat it in to blend. Try the Cover Stick version from Maybelline--it's under $5. Most of us will not need to use this step. I didn't use it here and it's completely optional.
  • This next tip is VERY important. DON'T USE CONCEALER. Concealer is generally a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Why would you use this to cover a pimple? All it does is make your zit that more obvious, like a bullseye. And many concealers are too thick, causing a cakey look. Don't use a BB cream or tinted moisturizer because we want coverage.
  • Instead, use your regular foundation that matches your skin tone. I really like Revlon ColorStay (especially the Whipped version).
  • Take a small, pointed brush, like this one from Sonia Kashuk (Target) and get the tiniest amount of foundation--like half of what you think you need. There should barely be any product at all on the tip of the brush.
  • Dot the foundation on the zit. Pat it in with your finger to blend. If the zit is still showing, take the same brush, using the remaining product, and repeat the process.
  • Once you are covered, take the large, fluffy shadow brush, like this one, and dust a tiny amount of powder onto the area. That's it!

T I P S:
  • While I showed a zit here, I've used this same technique to hide beauty and birth marks.
  • Once again, use the tiniest amount to cover. It's easier to add than to take away product. This will avoid the cakey look.
  • Match your foundation to your skin tone.
  • If all else fails, use what I learned from Naomi Campbell via House of Style (because I learned EVERYTHING from that show as a teen): Take a brown eyeliner pencil and turn that zit into a beauty mark.

  8. I can totally account for the green color neutralizing the red of the pimple. At first I didn't believe it, but once I tried it I was amazed :) :)

  9. Green corrector: this is the stuff I come to you for.

Any tips on how to keep my bobby pins in my hair? They keep falling out. Too small? Wavy side up? Not enough?

  10. I use concealer too, a solid form, and it works ok.. hmm..

  13. I use drugstore toothpaste (Ultrabrite) to help my pimples go away. If you put a dab of toothpaste on overnight, it shrinks them right up.

  33. Oh interesting point about concealer. I tend to use my lighter concealer to help off set the shadows or use a powder like green to offset the red :)

  37. Yeah, I used to put on concealer to hide pimples, but that doesn't make any sense because it would always look cakey.

Good tips, and good luck on reaching your GFC goal (I already follow you). :)

  39. This is a great tutorial! Finding the green corrector was the best thing that ever happened to me! I don't like to use foundation, so I just use the green corrector and the Physicians color palette to blend it.

  42. I've never felt the need to hide a pimple before. Putting things directly on a troubled part of my skin really feels wrong. Not sure if it actually is though!

  43. I'm definitely using this trick. Thanks for sharing!

  44. This is so helpful! Every now and then, like everyone else, I break out and I know this sounds bad, but I usually cake on makeup over it, which of course makes it worse! Thank you so much for this awesome and informative post. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tada! Love this. I usually use my fingers but come to think of it pointed brush would be better. That way I'm not putting extra oil on a zip that needs zapping! ;)
