How To: Snakeskin Nails

I voted today! And that is officially the only political thing I'll say on here, haha. Let's see, how can I segue into today's tutorial? Hmm. Politicians can sometimes be sneaky snakes? Let's just get on with the tutorial for my (faux, obv) Snakeskin Nails! I got the inspiration to do these after looking at the pattern of my brush holder (see my How to Organize Brushes) and here we are. I chose a dark purple (Revlon's Bold Sangria) and a gold polish (Color Club's Disco Nap fr Birchbox), obviously not the colors of any snakes I've ever seen, but I liked the combination and it's perfect for fall/winter. This can be done from none to a few dollars. Here's How To:

T O O L S

  • Tulle (I used the same tulle from my Halloween post, but tulle is probably in your house already! Maybe on a wreath? An old shower pouf? Or a produce bag?)
  • 2 polishes of different colors
  • Clear/base coat
  • Polish remover for touchups
  • Sponge (I used a makeup sponge)
  • Paper plate/scrap paper

M E T H O D

Paint base coat and allow to dry.

Pour a little of the second polish onto a paper plate.
Wrap tulle around top of nail.
You can use two fingers two pinch the tulle to prevent it from sliding, if needed.
Dip the sponge into the paint and dab off.
Dab onto the tulle gently.
Gently remove tulle and allow to dry. Clean up any excess polish.
Paint top clear coat. Repeat for all nails.

N O T E S
  • Remember, if you end up dabbing on too much of your second color, just repaint and start over.
  • If, after a couple of nails, you're getting too much second color on your nails, just cut the sponge and start with a fresh side.
  • While I chose purple and gold, use colors that you like--there are so many possibilities! I wouldn't suggest glitter for this.
  • If nail art isn't your thing, just use this as an accent nail. After all, it's just polish! Enjoy.
What's on your nails today?

PS: My glittery background is actually an old Myglam clutch!

  36. Love it! But how do you get the tulle to not move around??

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anon: I wrap it around my nail and hold between two fingers. In the pic, the tulle is around my ring finger. My Pinky and Middle finger (or whatever two you'd like) are holding it in place.
