I'm obsessed with lip crayons, as evidenced by the pic above (I swear they are all different shades!). They're affordable, easy to apply, easy to wear, and convenient to pop in your purse (no melting). But some are definitely better than others. I've reviewed all of the drugstore lip crayons and I'm sharing the best and worst ones today. Enjoy.
- Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Lip Balm Stain
- Price: $7+
- Shades: 12
- Scent: Mint
- Wear: Glossy then fades to a stain
- Staying Power: hours
- Overall: Originally reviewed here. These were the first drugstore lip crayons I came across last year and they remain my favorite. They have pigmented colors that fade into a stain, which most of the others do not. These are moisturizing, but not nearly as much as others listed below. The mint can possibly be a negative since (a) some don't like mint (b) could be drying to lips but I didn't experience either. -Love!
2. Sally Hansen Colorfast Tint + Moisture Balm
- Price: $5+
- Shades: 10
- Scent: Vanilla (smells like sugar cookies)
- Wear: Glossy then fades
- Staying Power: hour
- Overall: These come in natural shades, perfect for those who want a slight bit of color. They are moisturizing, and that remains while the color does not.I like the subtle scent. -Like
3. ELF Essential Jumbo Lip Gloss Stick
- Price: $2
- Shades: 8
- Scent: cinnamon
- Wear: moisturizing then fades
- Staying Power: hour
- Overall: Originally reviewed here. I was only able to find a few of shades in stores, so the remaining shades would need to be purchased online. I liked the smell least of these. These were my least favorite, but they are the least inexpensive and provide sheer color. I have since returned or given these away. -Didn't like
4. Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color
- Price: $8.49+
- Shades: 8
- Scent: peach-apricot
- Wear: Glossy then fades
- Staying Power: hours of moisture
- Overall: Some colors are more pigmented than others. These are made with fruit extracts. They are moisturizing, but so expensive. Great moisture, smell, and (some) great shades. -Love!
5. Jordana Twist & Shine
- Price: $2.99
- Shades: 8
- Scent: sweet (candy smell)
- Wear: Glossy then fades to a stain
- Staying Power: hours of wear
- Overall: These are the most recent lip crayons I've encountered. I love the shade range and how they fade to a stain, like the Revlon ones. I compared the two here. These are a great deal, but are not easily found in stores (they are sold online too).
6. Covergirl Lipperfection Jumbo Gloss Balm
- Price: $6+
- Shades: 16
- Scent: some smelled like crayons, some smelled like powder
- Wear: Shiny then fades
- Staying Power: hour
- Overall: Originally reviewed here, I have since returned or given these away. These come in so many shades, as well as the Queen line. They are what they advertise--a gloss balm. I liked the packagint the best on these. So if you want moisture and sheer color that fades, then try these.
In conclusion:
- If I have swatched the lip crayon in a previous review, I have already linked to it. I have chosen not to swatch them all here, since some shades are hit and miss, and my focus is the staying power. However, if you would like a swatch from a brand, let me know and I will update.
- If a new drugstore lip crayon comes out, I will update this post. I currently do not own the L'Oreal Le Laque or Le Matte ones, since I couldn't find a shade that was available that I liked (only matte was available) and these are much slimmer. I've seen only 4 shades for these. Mostly red, dark shades.
- To "sharpen" these, be sure to twist up from the bottom--another reason why I like these!
- My top 3: Revlon, Jordana, Neutrogena (that price is too much!!)
- Best scent: Neutrogena
- A great alternative to more expensive lip crayon options, like Tarte or Clinique.
Have you tried these?
Which ones are your favorites?
Really good review :D Its clearly laid out and easy to understand. It drives me mental when posts are all over the place

I didn't try anything from this list, but I think I will be happy with Revlon:)
ReplyDeleteHave a great rest of the week

oh such a wonderful post honey!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't tried any of these yet. But we have been really curious about them lately. Now after reading this post we really want to at least try one. Think we will probably try the Revlon. Great post!
ReplyDeleteFor me my favourite lip crayons are the ones from Bourjois - they have lovely glossy shades, are long lasting and moisturize your lips at the same time. Xx

Crazy enough I have not tried a lip crayon as yet so this post will totally come in handy when I decide to give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis post makes me miss CVS, Target, Riteaid and even Vons/ Gelsons/ etc etc.. hahaha

Fantastic review, I really like the Revlon ones too!

Out of all of these I've only tried the Revlon and CoverGirl crayons. I like the pigmentation and lasting power of the Revlon, however like you mentioned they aren't very moisturizing...and I actually like the minty scent. The CoverGirl balm isn't bad but it isn't the best out there. :)

I really like the covergirl lip stains
ReplyDeleteLovely color ^^

Great reviews, Elle! One of my fave ways to treat myself (here and there) is to pick up a lip gloss or lipstick. Have a fab day! T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI only have one jumbo lip crayon and that one is by Clinique. Love it though.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a very detailed review. I haven't tried any of them as am more of an organic lipstick girl, but you just never know... x
ReplyDeleteVery helpful. I've seen these but been clueless as to how well they worked. You're delivering a public service!
ReplyDeleteThe revlon ones are definitely my favorite but a new one I just discovered are the Soap & Glory sexy mother puckers (yes that's really the name haha) They are sold at sephora. They are like a lipstick meets super gloss and feel sooo moisturizing on the lips for hours without being a stain. I am obsessed. If you can get your hands on these lip crayons try them out! I bought them on vacation in the UK so they were $7 there but unfortunately are way more here in the US. But totally worth it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fabulous review darlin, love this kind of post, your advices are so helpful! I tried your same Revlon and I have your same exact opinion doll!

Thank you for sharing this! I have to admit that I do not own 1 single lip crayon! But after reading this I am kinda intriqued by the one from Revlon. I think I just might give it a try. I am just always a little scared these dry my lips. I am addicted to balms so this is why I have never bought one. Lovely review!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list! I'll definitely make sure to take this all into account ;)

Thanks for your recommendations dear! I've been meaning to try Revlon Just bitten for a while and it sounds like it's definitely worth it!

good to know. i am a bit obsessed with lipsticks and crayons, too, even though i don't wear them as much as i should!! i want to try the neutrogena ones!
ReplyDeleteI've yet to try a lip crayon. Another thing to add to my list of things to test out!
ReplyDeleteOne of these days I'll have to try out the Revlon crayons. I have only used Tarte (kind of disappointing except for the matte one) and POP (the one I got from Ipsy, don't know if I would pay full price for it even though I like it)
ReplyDeleteThat cinnamon sounds perfect for fall! Too bad it wasn't great! Ill have to try the Neutrogena one!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the first burgundy color. So beautiful.

I really have to try that Revlon one....
ReplyDeleteGreat post! My favorite lip crayons are from Pur Minerals, but my favorite drugstore priced ones are the Revlon ones.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't surprise me that Revlon and Neutrogena are in your top 3. They have excellent products.
ReplyDeleteThanks for rounding up the best ones, it will be easier for me to pick one next time I am at the store.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried a lip crayon before but Jessica loves them.

ReplyDeleteI need to try some of these!

ReplyDeleteWill definitely look this up next time I go to the drug store!

this is very useful post... thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt’s a GIRL Thing
I've been meaning to try the Revlon ones! I keep forgetting about them. I have two Tarte lip crayons and while they're great, the price is kind of cringe worthy. Especially because I like my (cheaper) MAC lipstick colors better!
ReplyDeleteI have a couple Revlon crayons that I love.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant review as always!
ReplyDeleteGreat reviews. I've never tried a lip crayon to be honest but I guess I should get myself one cas they look so cute anyway :)

I haven't actually tried lip crayons before, but if I do, I will definitely check this post again, to see which ones I should buy and which avoid!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this review and the great information that comes with it! :)

Great reviews! I need to look for the Jordana crayons.
ReplyDeleteI love the revlon ones, especially the darker shades =) great review Elle!
ReplyDeleteI love lip crayons, they're so easy to use! I have the one from Neutrogena & I have to agree, they are so moisturizing but yeah they are expensive! Almost $9 I remember. Love posts like this =)
ReplyDeletewww.speakstyleandrock.com
I really like the Covergirl ones. I don't mind sheer color as I like the play up the eyes instead
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! I've been wanting to try these but I wasn't sure what brands to check out.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I've only tried the Revlon ones and considering how slow I am at using up my products, I've been holding back from buying more (I only have 8 of them *cough*). With the new Jordana ones at $2.99 each, I might pick up a few more!
ReplyDeleteNice Post! I've just started following you and I love your posts.. It's very clear and well written. I've been curious about these lip crayons and I've been dying to try out Bourjois Lip Crayons.. You should try them out too! Follow back? it'd be much appreciated x
ReplyDeleteI really like the Revlon balm stains and I also like the new rimmel lasting finish balm crayon too :) x
ReplyDeleteHeather | Of Beauty & Nothingness
Aaaand I don't have any crayons.. but that shall change soon!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried lip crayons, but I definitely want to give them a try now for the moisturizing! The Neutrogena ones sound so good. :)
ReplyDeleteI love lip crayons! I think Revlon's Just Bitten is the best although non-drugstore Clinique is my favorite ;)
ReplyDeleteThe vast land of makeup is still bewildering to me, so I found this post very useful. I will keep my eyes open for a CVS sale on your top 3 - I'd like to try them out. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Revlon Just Bitten are the ones I tend to reach for in the drugstore.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cindyslittleblackbook.com
I really like the Jordana crayons! I love the way they fade to a stain, as you say, so they last a long time even if you're too busy for touch-ups.
