Each week in January, I'm comparing two similar beauty products.
I call it This or That.
Enjoy & let me know what you'd like to see compared!
This week's edition should be called This, That, That, or That. While I'm comparing two similar lipsticks, NYX Butter Lipstick and Essense Look At Me Lipstick, I'll be throwing in some additional similar lipsticks. Check 'em out:
NYX Butter Lipstick is a newer product that I had to try. I really liked this wearable mauve (it's more of a wearable nude on me) shade in Pops.
- "The unique texture seems to melt onto the lips, giving full, yet lightweight coverage with a luxurious satin finish"--via website.
- $6
- 27 shades
- Not a fan of packaging, but it does make it easy to tell the shade.
- Not sticky
- Nice pigmentation
- Not "buttery" at all
I had to compare the NYX with a similar lipstick in my collection, Essence Lipstick in Glamour Queen.
- "Essence Lipstick has a smooth texture and extra glossy shine. The modern and personalized color-matched packaging makes finding your favorite shade as easy as 1-2-3!"--via website
- $2.99
- 7 shades
- Not a fan of packaging, but it does make it easy to tell the shade.
- Nice pigmentation
- Not sticky
- Very moisturizing
Overall:
- Both had similar packaging and were similar in shade, but that's where the similarities ended.
- I was surprised the find that Essence was much more moisturizing and shiny, even though it was not advertised as having a "butter" consistency. And it's half the price!
- I compared the NYX to Revlon Lipbutters and Maybelline Color Whispers, since the latter two are very similar. The NYX Butter Lipstick was no where near as creamy and moisturizing as those. Essence is not a dupe for those, but it is very moisturizing.
- If you're looking for a "butter" lipstick, skip NYX. Try Revlon, Maybelline, Essence, or NYX Butter Balms or Glosses instead.

it is a beautiful nude shade - too bad it's not moisturizing. I have to try Maybelline whispers now!

Love the pink nude colours here! xo Caroline
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reviews - it's such a beautiful shade! x
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the NYX butter gloss so I'm sad to see the lipstick is subpar. I have the matte one and it's awful. I need to try more Essence. I have picked up very few of their products.
ReplyDeleteHave never tried NYX lipsticks, but am a big Essence fan, and the lipsticks are indeed very moisturizing.
ReplyDeleteI love the color. Bummer about the non-butter consistency.
ReplyDeleteI think the best "butter-like" lipsticks are definitely the Revlon Lip Butters. I haven't had anything like it. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThey both seem really similar, I think Id prefer the NYX version though.
ReplyDeleteI'm yet to find a NYX lipstick that I like very much. I am wary of both NYX and Essence, though, as the only place I can get them is Ulta and the ones I have found always look like someone opened them, tried them and put them back.
ReplyDeleteGreat comparision. I have been wanting to try the new NYX butter lipsticks.

I think I'll have to check out the NYX version....
ReplyDeleteLipstick is such a tricky thing- and I'm SO particular! Thanks for the helpful reviews!
ReplyDeleteThese sound all great and look beautiful. I always love nude shades! Thanks for this great review! XOXO, Sissi http://www.beauty4free2u.com
ReplyDeleteYou really can't beat the price of the Essence one! That is a steal!

I've never tried this brand, but I'll try anything once :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! So glad I didn't pick up that NYX lippie now.
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at essence makeup up yesterday. I have way to many lipstick and lipgloss.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to look for Essence. What a steal and a deal!
ReplyDeleteI have not tried this particular shade from essence but i have some other shade and they are really nice lippys at such an afoordable price...was thinking of picking up nyx butter gloss now will skip it and buy this shade from essence!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer, I was really looking forward to try the NYX lipsticks. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I was actually really wondering abt NYX's butter lipsticks so this is quite helpful!

Oh my god both are so so cute! I dig nude colors like these but unfortunately they make me look too washed out because of my Indian skin tone. I wish you and your loved ones a very happy new year

I love the nude/mauve tones--so, this has been helpful. Will likely go for the Maybelline Color Whispers having read your review. Thanks, Elle! http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOh I saw the NYX butter the other day at Ulta and I was thinking of trying it because I really like the Revlon lip butters but I guess maybe I should try the maybelline one instead because of your review compares it more with the Revlon ones. Thanks Elle! :)

Another great review, keep 'em coming, Elle! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnything with "butter" in it instantly gets compared to Revlon's lip butters and there just IS no comparing to Revlon's lip butters in my eyes!
ReplyDeleteGreat shades!
ReplyDeleteI send you lot of kisses boo <3

Stopping by to say hi :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! I love the NYX butter glosses, but looks like I should stay away from the lipsticks. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat comparison! If I can find Essence, I might pick a lipstick up!

I would love to find a nude lipstick that works, and the Essence one looks great! Thanks for the review. :)
ReplyDeletethese are really pretty colors! i'm obsessed with (of all things) the avon chapstick/gloss that i posted about a couple days ago!
ReplyDeleteI cannot even fathom that Essence can win in any beauty battle. I have the NYX Butter Lipstick in Big Cherry and it is very moisturizing, very true to the butter smooth claims. I will purchase the Pops hue as well so I can see for myself how much can it differ from Big Cherry in texture. I am not a fan of Essence and I only pick up random nail art tools from them. Cheap and it shows.
