Whether we buy a product because of the hype or because of the cute packaging (guilty), we don't always read the ingredients. And then we're generally surprised when a product breaks us out or makes us even oilier! Here's a quick tip to try (in addition to reading those ingredients):
So if you see a ring instantly (this wasn't even 5 minutes!), you'll know it will be too oily for oily skin. And here the products are 20 minutes later (these are primers, by the way):
Now moisture isn't a bad thing, but based on the pic, if you have oily skin, whatever product with the largest ring might not be the best for your skin type and could make your skin oilier.

ReplyDeleteI never would have thought in a million years to do something like this! What a cool tip!
ReplyDelete@cindyslittleblackbook--which BB book are you referring to? I just looked in the Makeup Manual and don't see this in there. That's the only one of hers I've read/own.
ReplyDeleteWho knew?! Such a cool tip!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great tip. I usually notice my skin getting oil after I bought it and tried it, then have to throw it away.

Never really thought to do this, but such a good idea. I'm not inherently oily so I'm not sure I NEED to do this, but I feel like I really want to anyway now.
ReplyDeleteHoly moly, that is disgusting!!! I have oily skin, so once a product doesn't break me out or cause me to be oiler, I stick with it.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice, Elle! I never would have thought of this and will definitely start doing it. Thank you!
ReplyDeletesmart thinking!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting!! I never thought to do this before, but this is really great! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteawesome tip! I've learned that, especially for night and in the winter, the richer the better but now I want to go try this with my moisturizers just to see :D
ReplyDeleteI'm equal parts scared and excited to try this. Thanks! x
ReplyDeleteGreat advice!
ReplyDeleteGood idea.
ReplyDeleteAccording to this test my primer is awesome for my oily skin, yay!

Wonderful tip, Elle! Though I've always thought that whilst some of the oilier products can make the skin look oily, the oil (unless it's some bad one) doesn't necessarily cause break-outs. I have a combination skin which is prone to spots, but since I've started using EVERYTHING oil-based my problems just disappeared completely. I guess it's still very individual... x
ReplyDeleteI never knew this! I have to try this test out, gosh, our creams could be blocking our pores with all that oil. Elle, I have to say your beauty blogging talents need to be lent to a magazine
ReplyDelete@fashionedbylove Right. It depends on the ingredients as to what causes the blockage of pores, two ingredients I mention in the video and post linked to. I didnt want this post to be a repeat of that one. And the oil cleansing method is still so popular. However, majority of my readers have oily skin and the biggest complaint is the products they use make their skin oilier. I've found this is because they don't read the labels--such a common sense thing to do, but many get sucked into the hype of a product or just aren't educated (I've been involved with cosmetics for 30 years. My grandmother had her own cosmetic line). This is just a quick test to see the moisture contents of the product, obviously not a sure - fire test for breakouts.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little scared to do this! ahah

Interesting! I never knew about this trick! I have an oily skin type (except not so much in this horribly dry winter!) so this is good to know!
ReplyDeleteThat is a super cool test! I've got to try it! Awesome!

Ha. that is so nifty! I am so going to try this with my cream:) Thanks, lovely.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting! I definitely don't want to put some of these on my face. It's pretty crazy that there's enough oil in them to make rings. Kind of gross.
