Take a section of hair from the left side of your head. Twist it away from your face (counter clockwise). Bring it around to the crown of your head, all the way towards your ears on the right side, and pin it horizontally, as pictured.
On the right side of your hair, grab a section of the same size, and repeat the twist.
You will take this twist from the right side and place it on top of the first twist. Slide the ends of the right (or 2nd) twist under the first one. Pin horizontally into place.
I was asked about the placement of the bobby pins--I used ones that matched my hair color to hide them, but am showing you here where I put them. I put them in horizontally and I needed only 3 for my thick hair. Try spraying bobby pin with a dash of dry shampoo before inserting.
And that's it! From here you can pull at the twists to make them "fatter" or "pancake" as they are referred to in the book. While this is done with straight hair, try with curls or waves in hair (heat or no heat). Add more pins if needed. I've also tried this with a bun underneath (messy or "perfect").
This hairstyle came from the book, The Braiding Handbook, by Abby Smith. It's currently on sale for $10.72 on Amazon. I had an opportunity to review this book and have spent the past few months trying out all 60 (!!!) hairstyles.
I loved the range of hairstyles, which are arranged by type, like braids, twists, formal, fishtails, etc. I do wish it was labeled by ability level, but have found that these styles range from beginner and up. If you're looking for something new to do your hair (or your child's hair) I highly recommend this book!
