This or That: Naked Basics Vs. Naked2 Basics

So a few weeks ago I did a HUGE haul, and asked what products you wanted me to review, and the Naked Basics palette was the winner, hands-down. I used to do a This or That series on here, and when others started doing This or That, I stopped. But I'm bringing it back, and I've got some comparisons each week to show you. Time for this week's This or That:

The biggest complaint I've heard is that they are the same. Here they are compared with the UD Naked Basics 2 on top.  While a couple of the shades look similar in the pan, they are different.

And swatched here they look similar, but they are different. I chose to swatch them on white paper because the lightest shades are hard to see on my skin. Let's explore them individually:

The original Urban Decay Naked Basics palette--this is another in the series of Naked palettes. This one has one satin and five mattes, full of basic colors that will complement any palette or shimmer/satin shadows you have. It's sleek and compact and includes a mirror for $29. The shadows are lighter in color and don't swatch as well as others. The shadows are smooth, minus crave which does have a bit of fall out when swatched.

Released this year is the follow up: Urban Decay Naked2 Basics. This features shades that are a bit cooler in tone, that are on the taupe end of the scale. Five of the shades are brand new, with Skimp being the only shade with a slight satin finish. It swatches much better than the original version and the shades are more pigmented. The cooler-toned Undone, which is nearly a slate grey, does feature fall out. Some have commented that this one has more fall out, and maybe I got a good one, because that doesn't seem to be the case for me. It is $29 as well.

Why do you need these palettes?
-for a natural, matte look
-to complement shimmer, satin, glitter shadows
-for blending
-good basics to have
-could possibly use for brows or for contouring

Do you need both?
-Unless you are a makeup fanatic (me) I don't think you do.

Is the quality good?
-Minus the black shades, the shadows are smooth. Matte shadows are generally harder to make, because it is hard to get good quality out of them. I have been pleased with these palettes.

This or That:
A quick search deems that both are pretty close, with the original palette as the winner. In my opinion, I believe the 2 to be better in pigmentation and have been really pleased with it. If you are looking for warmer shades and lighter colors, chose the original. Medium and olive tones might like the 2 better. There is no true winner here for me--it comes down to personal preference. My personal faves for high-end mattes are from LORAC.

In the spirit of being thankful, I want to thank YOU for taking the time to read this post. I am offering a few giveaways here on my blog as a token of that thanks. Please consider entering them by clicking the links below.

  1. I have both of them and love them both. I really use one (or the other) everyday! I do think the second one has more fall out on the shadows though!

  5. I think I would choose the original palette too. I like the range in shades a little more since I like to use dark eye shadows in place of liner sometimes. It seems like the original would be better for that! Great comparison!

  6. When I started reading I was totally thinking the 2 would be better. Glad you confirmed it with saying olive skin might like the 2 better. Winner. You rock!

  7. Matte shadows can be tricky- love that these are higher quality, and the smaller palette size makes 'em super travel friendly. :) Great review, Elle!

  11. Thank you for doing this! I still am on the fence, and I just bought the Too Faced Natural palette (I liked the combo of shimmer and matte), but I still might buy one of these in a couple of months.

  12. Great review - having all three palettes already I think I'm going to steer clear of these palettes - no more room lol!!

  14. I use my large Naked 2 almost every single day. To me, it has a lot of easy to work with neutrals that compliment my pale skin. If I had to pick between these Basics I'd choose the second. I'm really attracted to cooler tones being a pale red head. (;

    Great review Elle!

  17. Wow, they are very similar but it does appear the Naked Basics (1) has a bit lighter of shades, which for me is better for every day use!

  18. We always wondered what the real difference was between the two palettes. This is so helpful Elle!!

  25. I have to agree with you and say that Lorac makes some of the best matte shadows. :-) I don't own either of the Naked Basics and have been debating them for some time now. :-) Thanks for the comparison, Elle. xo

  32. They really do look similar when you are just looking at the pictures of the two palettes. I like the colors in them, but I have the first Naked palette and I don't really see a need for all the others for me. If I were to get another it would probably be one of these though...

  33. I just got 1 and I love it. I asked my makeup artist friend which one I should get since I'm bad at picking these things out.

  34. Great comparison post, Elle, and thank you for this. I am medium skin tone so I think NB2 will suits me much better.

  40. I still haven't tried these but hopefully I will soon:)

  41. I've always heard about the Naked Palettes, but I've never tried either one. I like the soft neutral colors in both of these.

    ReplyDelete
  42. After looking at the swatches I love them both and I have no clue which one to choose for colors wise, but like you said it seems as if the NB2 is more pigmented, so I might lean more towards that one.

  43. They look pretty much the same except for the neutral colors in the Naked 2 are darker colors.

  44. I bought the Naked 2 Basics recently and I love it to bits. It's been my go to palette for work. So versatile. x

  45. I like the first one better, though I have enough mac palletes to cover all the neutrals.. You just can't get enough of them though, right?

    ReplyDelete
  46. What an interesting comparison! The palettes look so similar, I can't imagine I'd be picky with either. It's a shame the black shadows are not as up-to-par as we'd like a high-end matte to be! I've never tried a matte LORAC eyeshadow, only shimmers. I'll be sure to take your preference recommendation into consideration when looking through palettes next makeup-shopping-trip!!

    Much Love,
    -Stephanie Eva
