DIY Santa's Lip Scrub

I don't know about y'all, but the cold weather is drying out my lips something crazy! And sometimes using a warm cloth or toothbrush to soften lips just doesn't do the trick--especially not this time of year. So I rely on a good diy scrub and lip balm to treat my lips instead. I've shared lip scrubs on here before (check here and here) but today's version is Christmas-inspired (and inspired by Lush's version, just cheaper). This would make an adorable gift, too. Get ready to make my DIY Santa's Lip Scrub:

Supplies:
  • red colored sugar (can be made or bought)
  • coconut oil
  • optional: edible oil (vanilla, cinnamon, peppermint, chocolate, etc.)
  • container for storage
  • small bowl and spoon for mixing
Directions:
  • The size of the container determines how big your batch will be. Below, you'll see my tiny one from the Container Store for .99 cents. If you're making enough for single use, I would suggest a couple of tablespoons of the sugar to one tablespoon of coconut oil. Mix it all with a drop or two or essential edible oil. The oil can be in liquid form (be sure it isn't too hot if you've melted it) or solid.
  • Rub onto lips using fingers, toothbrush, or soft cloth. If you're making the edible version above, you can lick away the sugar scrub. Be sure to wipe off lips before applying lip balm.
  • Enjoy your soft lips!
FYI (aka way too much detail):
  • The Lush version is cola flavored and has edible hearts. I skipped all of that to make a version that you most likely have in your kitchen.
  • To make this similar to the Lush version, and for CHRISTMAS I used red food coloring, but it is completely optional.
    • Store bought colored red sugar is generally made with raw sugar, so it will be chunkier/slightly rougher in texture. You can make your own version with granulated sugar and food coloring--mix in a sealable plastic bag for no mess. I used both to have different textures.
    • But note when using food coloring, you could possibly have red fingers and/or a slight red tint on your lips (I like that, but some might not).
    • If you want the red but not the color on skin, try mica, lip tint, or soap colorant (I get this at Michaels. Please do not ingest.)
  • While I used coconut oil, I have made this with lip balm and with various oils, like olive oil.
  • I used peppermint oil to make mine more holiday-themed, but feel free to skip or use whatever edible oil or powder you'd like. I've used cinnamon, and while it slightly plumps my lips, it could be an irritant to some. using flavored oils has never made my lips drier.

  42. I get gross dry lips in the winter. Which is shocking since I'm constantly using some form of lip balm or lipstick. Lush lip scrubs are my favorite! Looks like I'll have to try this WAY cheaper alternative. (:
