Threading:
What Is It?
An ancient hair removal method from India using thread rolled over hair. Usually for brows and upper lip, but I have seen it on arms.
Cost:
$10 avg.
Time:
5-10 minutes, depending on area
Pain:
Since lines/rows of hairs are removed from the root at once, it can be uncomfortable, but doesn't last.
Cons:
While becoming increasingly popular, it is still not as easy to find threading places as it is to get brows waxed.
I have been pleased with both methods, with results being similar. Sometimes I will swear waxing is more precise and then I'll swear by threading for better results. As far as hair growth, it's been around the same. But for me, I have to choose threading. There's little pain, it takes little time, it can possibly be cheaper, and I have never had a reaction.

Waxing:
What Is It?
Wax is applied to skin with a cloth or paper strip adhered to the waxed area and then removed quickly. Waxing can be done on many areas of the body. There are different methods and types of waxes, but I am referring to waxing in general.
Cost:
I'm just referring to brows here, but $10 avg. I've seen it go as high as $70+ for brow shaping/consulting.
Time:
5-10 min
Pain:
Usually this occurs as the strip is removed and the area can be tender after.
Cons:
This or That:- I have had allergic reactions (swelling and redness) from wax. I have been burned by the wax being applied and from the person applying wax to an already waxed area.
- There seems to be more cleanup after waxing, as in tweezers, scissors, products to remove excess wax, soothe skin, etc.
- Skin is usually temporarily red, depending on skin sensitivity, reaction, etc.
- Waxed areas are temporarily sensitive to the sun.

I have thought about doing threading SO many times but haven't. I really should give it a go. I personally hate waxing because it's such a mess.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a waxing girl and my go-to spot is Benefits brow bar...actually have an appt tomorrow LOL! Threading is beyond painful to me!
ReplyDeleteGreat comparison. I have to do threading because I use Retin A. Waxing is a big no no for me.
ReplyDeleteI've honestly never tried either so this was really interesting! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletei've never done either! can you believe that?! xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI have never done either one of these. Thank for sharing the info
ReplyDeleteI've done both, and prefer threading too. Plus, waxing really stretches your skin over time!
ReplyDeleteI've tried both and l actually prefer waxing it is a lot quicker.

I have never tried threading. You will have to give me the scoop on where you go in the ATL!

I've tried both and I keep going back and forth between which one I prefer. Threading is a bit more painful in my opinion but it does go away quicker!

I have never tried threading but I want to. I was thinking of taking my teen daughter with me too. She has never shaped her eyebrows. I gave up waxing a few years ago. Plucking has been my go to(: Susan
ReplyDeleteI found this very interesting. I've never tried either, but now may try both to compare. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried threading, it looks scary. I'm not sure it I'll ever give it a try. I have done waxing, wasn't too bad.

I have tried threading and love it, My sister's best friend has been doing it I guess in their family for many years, so I go to her when I visit. I prefer threading.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in school I had a girl in my class that would thread all of our eyebrows and she was the best!! But she moved back to India! :( I have never gone anywhere since then for threading!

i've been wanting to try threading! i break out so bad from wax.

I have always preferred threading, I think it's more precise and natural.

We have a threading place in our mall & every time I pass, I want to try it, but I heard it was so painful so I'm scared. Though I do white knuckle the chair every time I get waxed so I can't imagine it being any worse then that.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried threading before! I've done waxing a few times but I have supee sensitving skin and they will still be red the next day lol!!
ReplyDeleteDo you have an Atlanta recommendations for threading?
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't tried threading, but I've never seen any in the area I live in. I'm guessing if I wanted to find one I could try a few towns over, but I don't go that way often. I usually do waxing for my brows when I go to the hair salon.

I've never tried threading before. I pluck my eyebrows since I can't let them grow in long enough since the thick stray hairs drive me crazy! I would love to try threading though. I think waxing does a better job at getting every hair.
ReplyDeleteAfter a horrendous experience with waxing in college, I cant say I'll ever muster up the courage to try again. However, threading, I'm open to the possibility. Sadly the only place around us that does threading are those little kiosks at the mall and for some reason that seems a bit sketchy to me.
ReplyDeleteI prefer my brows a bit thick. (In my mind I think I look like Lily Collins) So another hesitation of getting them professionally done is the fear they will over do them. For now, I just pluck.
Hmm, I'm the opposite, I go for waxing over threading. I find waxing to give a neater result.

I love threading, even though it's a little painful for me while it's being done. But I like that it's quick and inexpensive. I've never tried waxing and am afraid it might be more painful, not to mention messier. I used to get my entire face threaded, and while I loved the results, it was just too painful for me. I now only get my brows done.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to read more about threading! I've never tried either but don't mind plucking (for now anyways!).
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried threading yet. Luckily for me, there are a lot of choices in places to go near by. I might try it next time. I'm with you, sometimes waxing is very irritating to my skin.
ReplyDeleteInteresting - I've had mine waxed but never threaded. Loved your take on them both!

My sisters swear by threading, but I have never done it. I want to try, though!
ReplyDeletei have had my eyebrows waxed before but i have never tried threading. what i NEED to do is go get them shaped or something, they are just blobs of hair and no matter what i try they look like crap.
ReplyDeleteI've had both done and threading lasts longer but it does hurt more than waxing.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried either but my eyebrows need help!
ReplyDeleteI love threading!! There are a couple places right by my house that does it, but I like one girl that does it in the mall! Just book an appt every 3 weeks (she is busy like that) and its a done deal!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried threading but it sounds intriguing to me, especially since my eyebrows get so red every time I get them waxed.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post, Elle. I used to wax and absolutely hated it, even tried an at home kit. I've never tried threading either because I've heard that hurt just as bad. I will probably try it now :) Thanks!
ReplyDeletexoxo
I have never tried either. (Unless you're counting the cheap try at home wax kit.) I would like to have my eyebrows threaded. x
ReplyDeletei stick to my trusty tweezers, lol! waxing seems too painful, but i'd be interested in trying threading.
ReplyDeleteI am threading type of girl, although it took me a few tries to get over the pain. Waxing gives me acne and the redness seems to never fade away.

I actually have done threading myself...less messy! I always get spastic with wax... great post!

I've never had my brows waxed before, but I love threading so much! Slightly addicted :)
ReplyDeleteEmily // ahemitsemme.blogspot.com
I'm definitely more for threading:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I'd love to try threading but there aren't places here around :(
ReplyDeleteThreading is what i prefer everytime
ReplyDeleteI have done both but and I used to think I liked waxing better but I found a great person who does threading and she has made a huge difference in my brows. So now I'm a total threading person. :)

Oh defo waxing! I wax mine every 2-3 weeks!
ReplyDeleteI've waxed my lip many times but never my eyebrows... I've always plucked them individually. I'm too scared to let someone else do ANYTHING with my eyebrows! haha
ReplyDeleteI only pluck my brows, because I want to be very precise, and I just don't trust other people with the shape.
ReplyDeleteI've tried waxing and threading for my lower face... and both methods make me break out. I try to keep up with plucking or the occasional shave with a brow trimmer in a pinch. I will wax when it gets a bit much, but with the expectation that there will be a breakout. Ugh.
At least I have the waxing stuff at home, so I don't have to pay any extra for my face to break out!
I much prefer threading and there is a salon across the street for my apartment that does it for $7. And when I say across the street, I can see it from my bedroom window!
ReplyDeleteThreading all the way!! I have had the same reactions to waxing over the years that you have. Once, some of my skin came off! AHHH! I've also lost the ends of my brows numerous times to waxing. Threading hurts during the process but afterwards it's such a Beyonce-stalking-the-catwalk moment when you see you're perfectly shaped arches! BAM!
