How To: Glitter Heart Nails

Hey you! Maybe it was the amazing weather this weekend, maybe it was that spring is on the way, or maybe that I just happen to think pink+glitter+hearts=excellent combination, but I had to recreate one of my favorite nail art ideas for Valentine's Day. It's so easy, takes a minute to do, and can be easily customized. Are you ready? Let's check out this How To: Glitter Heart Nails tutorial.

You'll Need--

  • glue pen (mine is from Amazon.com, but Martha Stewart makes a great one. This one you don't have to squeeze, you just write/draw)
  • glitter (I chose fine glitter in gold, but choose any color you like)
  • polish (this one is from SinfulColors, but choose any color you'd like)
  • clear top coat--optional
  • optional: small brush to aid in glitter removal
1-Paint a coat of whatever color polish you choose. I chose pink.

2-Using your glue pen, draw a heart on your desired nail(s). A glue pen is one of my FAVE diy items. This one is blue at first and doesn't make a thick design. I chose one nail as an accent, but you can do all of them if you like!

3- Shake on the glitter! I use fine glitter so it's not as raised on my nail, just small and dainty. FYI: I don't like using glitter glue because it is thick and takes forever to dry. It also leaves it raised making it easier to snag and come off of my nail.

I usually shake the glitter over a sealable container so I can save the excess glitter (#teamfrugal). And then I use a small brush to brush way the glitter from around the heart. You know those tiny, unusable brushes that come in eye shadow compacts? I keep them and use them for nail art!

That's it! Add a top coat to seal the deal if you'd like. Other ideas I've done and thought you might like:

  • glitter dots--these are so cute and easy
  • glitter bows--for the more adventurous
  • glitter letters--I've done "l-o-v-e" (a letter on each nail with a heart)
  • EASIEST--Use permanent markers (like I did in this tutorial or this one) to draw the heart.
Extra Elle:
  • The weather was AMAZING this weekend. I found just about any excuse I could to be outside. How was YOUR weekend?
  • I spent Sunday cleaning my house from top to bottom--I'm talking ceiling fans, crown molding, baseboards, the curtains, all of it. Dust be GONE!
  • I leave for Walt Disney World this weekend!! I think that's why I was in such a mood to clean. I love coming back from vacation to a clean house. Are you that way?
  • I watched a little of the Grammys (I was getting caught up on Downton Abbey), but I saw Beck win Album of the Year--um, what?? And Kayne 's-fake-rush-followed-rant-afterword-stunt. -.-

  20. LOVE this! Looks like I need to get myself a glue pen - and how smart are you to save those useless eyeshadow compact brushes for nail art?! Genius. I watched all of the Grammy's so I have to go back and watch last night's Downton ... was it a good one? Happy Monday! (psst - so jealous you're headed to Disney! The hubs and I are considering going there for our anniversary in the fall).

  21. These are the cutest thing ever!! And it looks simple to do!! Where do you get your glue pen? Is it specifically for nails or just a regular glue pen? Have a ball at Disney! That is our favorite place!! Susan

  25. So cute. I want to do this!

I'm glad you're enjoying nice weather. Up here in NY, it's cold and miserable. I'm going to visit Atlanta in three weeks but, sadly, I won't have a chance to see you. Normally I get a hotel room and rental car when I travel for freedom of movement but this time I'm staying with a friend at her house and she's planning the entire trip. I'll see you next time for sure.

  26. I loved the glitter heart, so sweet! And the base nail polish you wore, one of my favorite colors! You are leaving to Disney, soooo cool! You are right, who doesn't like coming back to a clean house? Besides, having all cleaned from time to time in one go is very good to the soul!

  47. This is adorable and a great idea. You always give so many helpful tips and tricks that you have, that make this seem doable to me. Trust me, I am horrible at DIYs and nail art, but I love the tips you give. With some practice and your advice I think I can pull this off! I agree that the fine glitter is beautiful and love that you explained that it was much better than thicker glitter or glitter glue!
