This or That: NYX Highlight & Contour Pro Palette Vs. Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette

I'm keeping this short and sweet today! The contour and highlighting craze is at its peak, and beauty brands are all releasing their versions. I'm not gonna admit how many I own or have tried! I bought both, carefully reviewed them, and am ready to share the results with you!  I can't wait to share with you this week's This or That, where I compare two similar beauty products. Don't you love posts like these?

NYX Highlight & Contour HD Palette

  • $24.99
  • "Define your features like a pro with NYX Cosmetics refillable Highlight & Contour Pro Palette! Each set includes four customizable highlighting and contouring shades perfect for emphasizing your favorite features."
  • ULTA
  • Powdery, fall out
Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette
  • $46
  • "An exclusive contour palette featuring three shades for contouring and three shades for highlighting, designed to shape and define facial features to create a look of authentic dimensionality."
  • Sephora (currently says Sold Out)
  • Buttery, pigmented
This or That:
  • I love to share products that are affordable and that can save you money, but in this case, NYX doesn't compare at all. It was so awful that I returned it. I don't think it's worth the price--I'd say it's worth half the price. If you're into the c&h look, you need the Kat Von D palette.
  • But I do love NYX cosmetics! Check out a product I love from them here.
Extra Elle:
  • Y'all! Get ready because Georgia is entering a state of emergency due to the weather. I know, I know, you're laughing. It's a sneeze of snow compared to where you live. But I think I'd rather be safe than deal with the fiasco of last year. Three hours in traffic to go just a few miles? No thank you. I'm excited to get out of work early and home safely!
  • Feeling much better today and am heading to film this month's Chit Chat video soon. Any requests for questions, info, or products you'd like to see or learn about me?

  1. OMG I can't believe GA is entering a state of emergency! Didn't that happen a few years ago due to ice too? This weather is getting ridiculous. Stay safe girl! As for the review, good to know the NYX wasn't worth it!!

  2. I love the HAC trend! It's a lot of fun to play around with. This storm warning is cracking me up, but we are all home safe and sound waiting for the snowpocalypse to happen. Be safe!

  3. I'm normally a big fan of NYX, but good to know this one doesn't cut it. Great review!

  4. A state of emergency? Sheesh - none of you would survive in northern Wisconsin! :) Thanks for the review and recommendation of these products. I'm surprised that NYX missed the mark on this one.

  5. I've actually seen the NYX one in person, and wasn't impressed with the colors, so I passed - the Kat Von D definitely seems more appropriate for a gorgeous c+h.

  7. So, call me shallow or weird, but I won't by anything from Kat Von D because of what she did to Sandra Bullock. I know, I'm strange. ;)

  8. Oh no! I hope you dont get stuck like last year! I remember that. And I did giggle a bit when I saw Georgia friends photos of their yards dusted with snow, grass still peeping through. But I do understand that a lot of it goes with understanding that it's not the norm for you guys. Good luck girl!

Nyx is for sure my go to for affordable dupes. I'll have to check out this contour kit! (:

  14. Being from Chicago, it amazes me when GA enters a state of emergency! We even have a snow day right now in Atlanta, even though its really nice out at the moment. I miss home and the snow, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed we do get some here in the city this afternoon :) Be safe!!

  16. Thank you so much for this comparison! The KVD contour palette was on my back list. Something I may consider but wasn't running out to get. I hadn't even seen the NYX one, but I might have been tempted by the price, so it's great to know how they compare. Thanks Elle!

  17. Stay safe pretty girl! I'll have to get the KVD palette!

  18. I think countouring can do crazy things to your face, in a good way. I don't do it though. I do highlight on some occasions!

  23. I think I'll pass then on the NYX version. I use a concealer stick and the Maybelline Fit Stick for contouring. Works for me.

  24. I'm glad you're feeling better Elle. Stay warm and safe! Thanks, as always, for the honest review :)

  25. Just based on the colors included in the two palettes, I'm not surprised Kat Von D's won the comparison. Too bad for Nyx since I love them, too, but it's always good to know when a splurge is worth the money ;)

  26. hope you stay nice and warm and safe! wish i could go home early, lol.
really disappointed about the NYX palette, but honestly even if it was amazing, $25 is pretty expensive to me for NYX!

  27. This is so good to know because usually I love most NYX products. Sometimes, there is no substitute.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Im so glad you did this post!! I was tempted to get the Nyx one because it's so much cheaper but I'll skip it! I have bad luck with drugstore Bronzers it seems so thank you for your opinion on it! The Kat von d one is so pretty, do you like it more or better than any of the others that youve tried?

  32. Alabama is under a state of emergency right now too! We have seen rain, freezing rain and snow at my house so far today. The crazy thing? 10 minutes away from here roads are impassable!

I really want to get better at contour and highlighting. I think I am going to go to Sephora soon and have them do it for me so I can see how they do it. I do ok but I know they do better! Haha!

  33. I didn't great things about the NYX highlight and contour palette either but have seen the Kat Von D one around everywhere. Great review and be safe!!

  44. This is so good to new. We normally love Nyx so super surprised that the palette isn't worth is. Kat Von D has a tendency to do things right so no surprise that it's the better pick. Thanks for the review Elle!

  54. Great review! I was really wondering about the NYX Contour palette so thanks for saying it's not worth the price. I honestly would rather pay more money and get a high end one anyways because the NYX one is almost $30. State of Emergency haha wasn't that a funny one?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Great comparison!! I hope you kept safe in the state of emergency. Was the weather that bad? Keep warm girl!

  56. I've been wanting to get into the highlight and contour trend, I do more of the contour but don't really highlight. I'm sad the nyx one isn't that great but I'm hoping there is a cheaper version that works better. But yeah sending you some warm vibes from California.
