Hey you! Did ya miss me? I took a day off to celebrate 5 years of Elle Sees! By the way, did you check out my $100 Sephora Giveaway? Not into Sephora? Boo on you! ;) I will gladly take it off your hands if you win. Just saying!
Speaking of Sephora, the VIB sale is currently going on, and that prompted me to think of beauty products that I regret buying. Most of these are high-end, but if you check out the video I made, you'll see drugstore stuff too. And just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't be awesome for you! Here are a few of my regrets (for more details, watch the video below):
- GlamGlow ThirstyMud Mask--Not that hydrating! And it's really expensive. Try one of my DIY masks instead.
- The Balm Nude Tude Palette--I wanted more mattes and I don't use half the colors. I find I like the same colors better in other palettes. It's not awful, just not for me.
- Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream--This is my biggest beauty regret. It's $95 and is most definitely not magic. It is a nice, light moisturizer that can be worn by all, but it didn't do much for my skin.
- MAC Studio Sculpt--Love this foundation, but it kept separating on me, both times I purchased.
- Jergens Instant Sun Bronzer--I shared this in a This or That post recently. Both the light and deep bronze versions gave me an orange-bronze. Too artifical-looking and not cute.
- Butter London polish in Trout Pout--Peachy-pinks are my FAVE shades for polishes. And lipsticks. And blushes. But back to the polish--this chipped horribly on me within 1-3 hours. And for $18, I was expecting better quality.
- Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Classico--This is a nice mascara, but it's $30. I can easily find something comparable at the drugstore.
- LORAC Skinny Nude--This consistency of this palette is similar to the Unzipped ones, not the buttery softness of the LORAC Pro palettes that I love. I just didn't like the colors on me.
But wait! There's SO MUCH MORE!
In the video below I share the rest of the product regrets--you'll see more drugstore items. I hope you check it out! Watch it with your morning coffee!
Extra Elle:
- I wanted to apologize for how I look in the pic/video. I didn't sleep well and my allergies (and Charlie's too--he's sneezing in the video) made me look awful! I know--I'm my worst critic, but I wanted to keep it real. Even beauty gurus have for days!
- Got my new phone set up! I was planning on moving all of my old stuff over from the old one, but when it said estimated time was over 7 days, I said forget it! Ha.
- Any fun weekend plans?
- I'm doing my annual Q&A video/post! ASK ME ANYTHING about beauty or myself!
The Butter London polish is a lovely shade so it's too bad it didn't show up well!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated blog birthday! I'm going to enjoy a quiet weekend of cleaning and maybe one tourist activity with my husband's aunt. Woohoo weekend!

I must admit, I also find Glamglow way overpriced and over hyped and yes, I happily make my own version, too - much better and works well. :) I haven't tried any of the other things you've mentioned, but will keep the notes in mind for the future. :) Have a lovely Friday, Elle! x
ReplyDeleteHappy 5 years of blogging Elle. Your blog has so many readers and fans because it is wonderful. I am glad you also make mistakes when purchasing poducts. Imagine a non-expert like me LOL. And you don't look bad on the video at all. I love when you wear light colors. Cute Striped tee. =)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, my friend!
totally agree with butter london, they chip so badly.

I totally bought that GlamGlow hydrating mask yesterday and I COMPLETELY agree. Glad I only got the small size to try out. It leaves my skin feeling smooth but not that hydrated. Love this post, it's good to hear things you aren't loving!

Thanks for reviewing the Butter polish. I have been wanting to try this because of the lovely shades. I will stick to Jamberry and Julep(: Susan
ReplyDeleteI'm sad the Jergens tan didn't work for you - I bought it for my vacation a few weeks ago and loved it!!! Any polish that chips within the first few hours is awful - not buying for sure! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy knowing what beauty bloggers didn't like. I felt the same way about that GlamGlo Thirsty Mud. So many bloggers were acting like it was a miracle product. I was not impressed. I'll try you DIY. That bites about the Charlotte Tilbury--When you spend that kind of money on something it needs to be amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe Butter nail polish that I have also started to chip very quickly...too quickly for the price!

It's really so bad when we buy something with high expectations and then it turns to be maybe not bad, but not accomplishing what it promised. I have some products that I regretted buying, and yours Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream for $95???? It's terrible, for that price should be much better! Also, the Butter London nail polish is bad - for $18, for sure the quality had to be better. I had a problem with nail polishes, Just like this Butter London one (I never used it), some chipped awfully after 1-2 hours. Then I started experimenting, experimenting... and now I know the ones that work. Unfortunately, that's it: we have to go on testing and sometimes regretting :(

I love your comparison to a blind date or orange mascara! Too funny! But in all seriousness, this was a really interesting post! It's too bad some of the more expensive products didn't work out for you!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the Lorac pallette, it looks so Good!
ReplyDeleteIt´s great to know which products you shouldnt purchase, thanks you! :)

I was also a victim of Trout Pout. And I don't feel like the color I got (ordered it) was how it appeared almost everywhere I saw it. Not a fan. I ended up throwing it out.
ReplyDeleteI love Butter London polishes, but I can attest to their chippy factor. However, after messing with a few top coats, I found that if you use the Sally Hansen Miracle gel top coat over them, they last way longer! Just a thought so you aren't out $18 bucks. (; Have a great weekend Elle!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...dont' call my baby ugly!
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, I've been eyeing that Lorac palette, but that's disappointing it didn't work for you. But as you said, it might for some people, so....:D
Spending money on products that don't work well is a major bummer! I've liked a few Butter London polishes, though I usually have chipping issues no matter what type of polish I use. I think I just don't layer on enough coats.
ReplyDeleteI have some butter polishes and don't love them either :(
ReplyDeleteoooh, I like this kind of post I am a sucker for anything big companies tell me when it comes to makeup and skin care, so it's good to see the real side!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your honest opinions. I really wanted to try the Charlotte Tisbury cream but didn't because of the price.Spending money and not like the product is the worst.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience with these products. I was interested in the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream but you have me rethinking it now.

I really like posts like these with honest opinions! I'm especially happy to know about the color of the Jergens product - I like trying those, but don't want to turn orange haha!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this to us.

I have one Butter color and its light pink and I agree I was disappointed for the price! I loveeeee the color but since it's light pink it goes on pretty streaky and I have do a lot of coats! Not worth the money! But all of their colors are just so pretty so it makes me sad!

I'm so sad you didn't like the Glamglow mask! I love mine, and I feel like it is a life saver in the winter when my skin is parched.

I can totally agree about the nude tude palette. I never use mine and don't like the color selection. It was one of those 'youtube made me do it' purchases because everyone was talking about it.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that Butter (and essie!) are not worth what you pay when they chip so quickly. The Balm palette I also agree on; so overall you're right on point I vote :)
ReplyDeleteI hesitated from investing in CT magic cream because of the mixed reviews too. It's crazy pricey but have read that it didn't do much for the skin. Glad to read this, I'll definitely be skipping it now.

I hate when nail polishes chip, I have so many that are so bad but such nice colors it sucks! haha

I didn't like the Balm Nude Tude either. I have the Urban Decay Naked Pallete and the Lorac Pro palette so I don't know why I felt the need to buy that one. I use only a few shades as well, and they aren't that pigmented. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteBreakfast at Gracey's
Funny that you mention it lol. I heard that Mac foundation wasn't all that great. I love this post. I love hearing about beauty mistakes, because girl we all have them. I love that CVS will allow you to bring back a beauty item you don't like, after you've tried it. Amazing. I just followed you on social media as well Elle :).

Never try butter london polish before and probably not going to try them now. I hope you have a great weekend.

Wonderful video, thanks for this informations. ^^
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend...
hahaha I am with you on treating make up like a bad relationship that you should have let go a long time ago!!! And look at little Charlie back behind you :)So dang cute!!!
ReplyDeleteI am learning more and more that high end expensive nail polishes are not worth it. I can find Butter at TJ Maxx and Marshall's and they have them for $3.99 or $4.99 and that is the most I would ever pay for it because hello just like the $4 bottles from a drug store!!! And glamglow yes!! So over priced!!!! I am so glad you were honest about the Jergens stuff because that is how I felt about it a long time ago and it doesn't surprise me that nothing changed with their foamy one. Hope you have a great weekend!!!
I think Glam Glow is so over rated. Its sooo expensive. I like Nude'Tude but its DEF not a palette that I reach for at all so I understand where you are coming from on that.
ReplyDeleteEveryone seems to rave about the Glam Glow masks! They're so expensive for what they are though!

I used to love Butter London polishes, but I haven't had good luck with my recent purchases. The polishes chip like crazy!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I'm so thankful I never purchased that Glamglow mask. I've tried many of the other ones and thankfully was able to find them on sale at Marshall's. The ThirstyMud is the only one I have yet to see there, but it's probably because it doesn't live up to the hype like the others.

i have been thinking about that glam glow stuff so i am so glad i never bought it!! thank you Elle! I actually was going to buy the elf eyelash curler too just to try it, even at $1 it's a waste of money if it doesn't work! and oh my gosh that brush from ebay is hilarious!!! it looks like they cut it except for a tiny bit. so odd!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is so good to know! Thank you for sharing this list!
ReplyDeleteMelanie @ meandmr.com
$95 is expensive for the magic cream. Too bad it didn't do anything magical.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the five years!
Can't wait to watch the video, Elle. I'm behind on my video watching, but hope to catch up with java in hand next Sunday. T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThe Glam Glow is so expensive. I almost bought that Jergens self-tanner and I am glad I didn't.
ReplyDeleteI FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT BUTTER! Ugh they frustrate me like nothing else!
ReplyDeleteThe Adored Life
Congrats on 5 years of blogging! I haven't tried any of these products. It's always a bummer when you are excited to try something new and it isn't what you expected. Thanks for sharing your review!

Doused In Pink
Thanks for sharing. I never had the pink colour in Butter London, but the other colours that I have worked well for me, but they also had glittering flecks in them too.
ReplyDeleteSpring Favourites
this is great. thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI loved this post and video! Not many people write about what doesn't work. I need to hear that side of it too!
ReplyDeleteThe only Butter London nail polishes I tried were the ones in a set for holiday seasons. I had the same problem.Thankfully with the set it was $35 for 6 of them instead of $18.
ReplyDeleteI love these types of posts/videos! I like to be warned about products. lol I have had issues with a couple of polishes from Butter London, so I don't purchase them anymore. I have one from them that I really like, and I've had at least 5.
ReplyDeletelol why do people get offended if you don't like something? Not everything is going to work for everyone... and you're very honest in your reviews. I liked GlamGlow's mud mask but definitely not enough to pay the hefty price tag. I also agree $30 mascaras are crazy to me because I can get the same at a drugstore, that's how I feel about Dior's mascara. Thanks for the reviews!
ReplyDeleteI always see favorites review but never a regrets list.. it's actually quite helpful. Thank you for this. And congrats on your success!
ReplyDeleteI have two Butter polishes, and they did the same thing to me.
