First, why lip stains? These deliver natural washes of color that can be worn by everyone, but most are very pigmented. They last for a while meaning you don't have to reapply. Many of these can be worn as a base shade--kind of like a lip liner, so you can apply lip glosses or lip sticks on top. They're easy to wear and to apply. Basically you need to try them! Keep reading to see my faves!
1-Benetint--When I think of lip stains, this is the first one that comes to mind. It's been around for years (you can look up the history if inclined) and can be used on cheeks as well. It is the very first thing I ever purchased from Sephora many years ago. Who remembers stuff like that? Crazy beauty fanatics such as myself! Anyway, it is very liquid-y and leaves a light, buildable just-bitten look. 1 shade, $30 *best for just-bitten lips*
2-Becca Beach Stain--A créme stain that tints lips and cheeks with a natural wash of color. The oil-free, streak-free stain is enriched with antioxidant vitamin E to repair and soothe skin and the water-resistant formula stays put with a subtle, fruity (watermelon) scent. If you want a matte finish, this is the one to get. It comes in 8 shades and is a must-have for me. I want them all and a little goes a LONG way. $25 * best for matte and long-lasting*
3-Dior Cheek & Lip Glow-- Cheek and lip blush that gives the skin a flush of pink. This two-in-one hybrid formula is infused with Fresh Color Reveal™ technology, which instantly reacts to the moisture in the skin and lips to give them a luminous custom pink glow. Similar to Benetint but more moisturizing and more of a gel-like feel. It's beautiful and natural. 1 shade, $37 *best for natural wash of color*
4-Sephora COLLECTION Rouge Infusion Lip Stain-- A zero-texture lip stain that is buildable up to a point as it can roll off. It is very moisturizing and lightweight. It comes in 12 shades ranging from natural to pigmented. $14.99 *best for affordable option at high-end level*
5-Yves Saint Laurent ROUGE PUR COUTURE Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain--This is one the best long-wearing liquid lip stains out there. As the name implies it is glossy and doesn't dry out lips. It comes in 20 shades. There are other lip products in the line that are great as well. This one is my fave! $36 *best for long-lasting and moisturized*
Initial swatches of each right out of the tube/bottle. Dior is showing purple here, but it is more of a pink color. |
Each product on the lips. You can choose natural shades, like I did for most of these, or more pigmented.

Yes I agree. Love Becca, Dior and YSL :)
ReplyDeleteI always shy away from lip stains because I thought that they were drying and that I would totally mess them up. I will have to give the a go, love that YSL color!!!

I really like the YSL on you! I am a fan of a little more color on my lips. It's great to know the different between them all!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try one of those YSL ones. I might have to check out the Sephora ones next time I'm in the store.
ReplyDeleteI have the Benetint and yes, it's light, kind of natural. I love Sephora and Dior brands, but Dior, impressively, is a no-go for me, for lips (facial products are great), but after your review I really really really want to test the YSL one! More color pigments and moisturizing power, I want it!

I've heard amazing things about the YLS tint and lip color, I may have to pick one up. I used to turn my nose up to stains because they weren't shimmery enough. But now, that I've grown up [haha] I find that stains are pretty awesome in their own right.
ReplyDeleteLips, eyes, hair....you ROCK it all girl. Just love ya!!!! Nice selection here!!! Happy Day!

I have really gotten into lipstains this year! I used to only wear lip gloss and now I'm like.... ew, how did I ever do that?
ReplyDeleteThe Adored Life
I LOVE Benetint - but I have really been wanting to try the YSL lip stain. These all look lovely!

So much goodness in one post! I've heard great things about all of these products - I'm going to check out the Sephora Collection one next time I'm at my parents!
ReplyDeleteThe YSL glossy stains might be my favorite lip product ever. I'll have to check out the other ones! xoxo Lauren
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried any of these but the Dior and Becca colors looks like colors I would wear.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't own any lip stains but I've heard a lot about the benetint
ReplyDeleteIve been dying for the YSL stain! Everyone always raves about it! Next time I'm picking it up for sure!

These sounds great! I didn't even know about these until your post!
ReplyDeleteMelanie @ meandmr.com
I think I might need to try a lipstain. I like the idea of not really having to reapply all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe only one of these I've tried is the Becca Beach Tint. Thanks for the rundown Elle!

That Becca color looks gorgeous! I don't think I realized it could be used on the lips as well as the cheeks! The YSL sounds like such a good option too-- long lasting and moisturizing is a definite winner!
ReplyDeleteI haven't try any of these out before.
ReplyDeleteYep - I gotta check out the DIY or Drugstore link. No high end for me - I loose stuff like that too easily AND the hubs hates lip 'stuff' anyways. What a bore.
ReplyDeleteI hear great things about the YSL stains but I would probably go for the Sephora brand one because of pricing.
ReplyDeleteOMG! I think Benetint was the first thing I bought at Sephora too! Love love love it to this day:)
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to pick up a Becca Beach Tint- and I think you've convinced me here! :)

ooh i'm not big on lip stain but I love #2 and 4!
ReplyDeleteI've still never tried a lip stain, but maybe I will this spring or summer. I love the five year old's description of "Easter-izing" the sidewalk! :)
ReplyDeleteI have never tried lip stain. I love all of these colors on you and I love they way at the end that you said what each kind was best for! Makes for easy shopping!!!
ReplyDeleteBenetint is the first stain I tried, and it's still my favorite :)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more....the YSL Glossy Stains are my HG, go-to lip stain product. I've also recently sampled the Sephora Rouge Infusions and have to say they are also pretty impressive and a great price!
ReplyDeleteLipstains are very diff to find in India but I love the options u mentioned :)
ReplyDeleteI never really liked lip stains - I always have this tendency to lick my lips when I'm wearing a stain and it tastes baaaadd haha. Not saying they product itself is bad of course, but I just don't think they're for me!
ReplyDeletebecky ♡ star violet
I love benefit anything. They make amazing products.
ReplyDeleteThe dior has to be our favorite both as a swatch and on your lips. Ok Elle, you sold us, we're going to go get it. Sometimes we feel like we want all the beauty products because of you ;)

ReplyDeleteI love lip stains!! I'm all about things that are easy, so I love not having to redo my lipstick a million times with lip stains! I've been wanting to try that Sephora one!

I have not tried any of these yet but I really want to buy one of the YSL Glossy Stains at some point. You didn't mention it, but I love the Sephora Cream Lip Stain. We don't have Sephora in the UK but I will certainly be looking for more shades next time I go travelling. x
