Ask Elle: Makeup & Starbucks

I'm back with another edition of ASK ELLE! I'm answering your beauty and personal questions. Enjoy!

618Mom: Should you buy different foundations in summer and winter?
In general, yes. Usually our skin will get a shade (maybe two) darker, and of course if you self-tan you'll need one to match. How do you know if your skin tone has changed? Match your foundation to your neck, never your wrist.

Tanya Lovetere: What was your very first high end beauty purchase?
purchased a Bobbi Brown stick foundation, BB lipstick in Brownie, and Benetint mini the first time I ever went into Sephora.

Meliora! I'd be curious to know in what order you put on make-up (foundation, power, eyeshadow, blush, etc etc) and why?
Kerry @ Till Then Smile Often I would love to know what your morning makeup routine is.
Almost daily I apply moisturizer or primer, do my eye shadow and liner, foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, and lip stick/gloss/etc. I usually don't powder.  It takes me 20 min, tops.

Tj and Amy Congrats! Do you have a favorite makeup artist? or a favorite eyeshadow palette?
Kevyn Aucoin was the first makeup artist I'd really heard of. He still remains a favorite for me. I also love Sutan Amrull and Matthu Andersen. I have a lot of faves for artists and palettes! I would repurchase the original LORAC PRO in a heartbeat. Love it.

kellyr78 My question is what SPF # lotion is best for daily use?
Trailer hood Chic Fave non-greasy sunscreen
At least 15. I am really LOVING the La Roche-Posay Mineral foundation--Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. They have it in 60 as well. I got this at Target and it's pricey--over $20, but it's SO GOOD. It's very thin but it doesn't break you out. I highly recommend it.

Rebecca Jo  What is your typical Starbucks order :)
The new S'mores frappe is AMAZING! In love with it!

What beauty questions would you like answered?

Don't forget:
$100 Visa Gift card

Extra Elle:
  • How was your Cinco de Mayo? Charlie and I were asked to go to a local restaurant to celebrate (did you see the pic on my Instagram?)
  • The weather has been amazing in Atl lately! How is it where you are?

  1. I loved reading this Q&A! I'm always curious the order everyone applies makeup too. I'm going to try that sunscreen! Thanks for the recommendation!

  2. I agree with Jill, I love all the questions people asked! And I need to try that S'mores frappe! I have heard it's amazing!

  3. I'm always curious about the order that people apply makeup in as well - it seems pretty idiosyncratic. I always break my face into regions - first I do my face it self, then eyes and eyebrows, then lips.

  4. Kevyn will always be my hero:) Love him.

  5. I too find it interesting to know what order others put their makeup on and I find it interesting you put on eye makeup before foundation. Kevyn was an amazing artist.

  6. OMG the smores frap!! Yum! I am guilty of not changing my foundation in the summer, I probably look a little off for a few months out of the year, haha! Loved this q&a, I learned a few things!

  7. I have been so awful at picking out foundation (for either winter or summer), and someone gave me the advice of needing two different ones for the seasons, and it all made sense!! Also, that smores frap looks so good!!

  10. Yesterday, I tried the S'Mores frap on Snapchat and it was such a funny first impression. A few people were like "you're hilarious" cuz at first I couldn't get the drink and straw working together (what am I? 5?) and then it was so good I was like a little kid in a candy store. BOMB drink!! xx

  14. I have yet to try the s'mores frapp, I must! Also, I've heard great things about several Kevyn Aucoin products, specifically the concealer I believe. I've never tried any though :(

  15. I really want to try the s'mores frapp. I think I'll do that tomorrow when I'm near the only Starbucks in our town.

I love your daily makeup routine. I'm trying superhard to start wearing some every day instead of always looking like crap so learning about other people's simple routines is interesting to me.

  21. I love these types of Q&A posts! The new S'mores frappe is my favorite. I've gotten it twice in the past week. I've never tried a Bobbi Brown stick foundation, but I used to use one of her liquid blends. I stopped using it in favor of less expensive brands, but am thinking of going back, since it did work better.

  29. Loved reading this next installment in your Q&A series! Forgive me if this was asked already but what's your take on fancy ingredients in skincare - how much do you think certain ingredients can actually penetrate the skin? I still buy all kinds of stuff anyway but sometimes I wonder...lol :-)

I always like to know what everyone's first highend purchase was! I'm glad someone asked you! Mine was the naked palette!

  32. Great answers. I put my foundation on first and sometimes use it as a primer for my eyeshadow. Always lotion with sunscreen first though. I bought Kevyn Aucoin's book a long time ago and still have it, such great info and tips.

  33. Mmm, the s'mores frappucino sounds good!! That sunscreen sounds intriguing too--I have some in my moisturizer but I'm not sure if I need more or not.
The weather has been good here in KC, although today it's been a little rainy.

  34. Great post! Sometimes i'm not sure if it's worth the investment to buy different foundations for different seasons but that's great advice!

  35. Nice tackling these questions. Yes, definitely I use different shades because my skin changes throughout the season. Have a great week Elle. <3

I keep hearing about the smores drink... it is happy hour this week, right? May be the perfect incentive to go try it myself :)

  40. Great Q and A. That Starbucks drink sounds amazing!

  41. I had the smores frap the other day and now I have to stop myself from getting one every day. They are divine! I am in search of a nude liner that actually stays in the water line. I have one from Rimmel that's supposed to be waterproof but it always wears off, even if I set with with a little bit of powder. Do you know a good one to recommend? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I really need to start wearing sunscreen more often and I know it!! Thanks for the recommendation on this one. I prefer pricey to breaking out!

  43. We had a lovely Cinco de Mayo, I was having a rotten few days and ate my feelings in Mexican goodness. It cheered me up. I loved your photo Charlie is so stinking cute!

    Sunscreen is a HUGE part of my routine. Love the smores frap, though milk doesn't like me, so only a few sips of my fiances will do. (;

  44. SMORES FRAPPE?! How did I miss this?!?! This sounds like literally the most amazing thing you could put in a cup for summer!

  45. And... you had me at s'mores ;) And Bobbi Brown!

  46. Such a fun post! And I haven't tried the new s'mores frappe yet, definitely on my list. It looks delish :)

  48. I believe one of my first beauty purchases was also from Benefit! It may have even been the Benetint! I also remember buying the Dr. Feel Good primer? Was it a primer? I didn't even think those existed over 10 years ago, but I definitely bought it, used it once or twice and could never use it again because I had an allergic reaction. Why I felt the need to smooth over my pores at 15, I'll never know haha

And omg, that smores Frappucino looks awesome. There's an ice cream place here that makes frappucino-like beverages, but they use their own ice cream (which here is like gelato)....it's truly amazing. The other day I ordered a Dulce de Leche Icced Cappucino (i think that's what it was called). No regrets haha

  49. Love it anddd I NEED that Frap. I still haven't tried it haha <3

  54. I have yet to try the S'mores frappe, but it looks amazing! I have been loving the peach green tea lemonade. I usually just stick to coffee (plain lattes to be exact), but I have since converted to a Starbucks tea drinker. It's so refreshing, especially during these hot months.

  57. My morning make up routine looks identical to yours. I love that you remember your first high end make up purchase! Mine came from Lancome. I tried their skin care line for the first "high end" experience. I loved it for years but have switched so much since then.

You and Charlie looked adorable!!! I have got to try that frap, maybe tomorrow morning as a Friday treat!
