When it comes to hair product must-haves, dry shampoo is right up there. It is awesome. But the biggest complaint I hear about it is that it gives white cast--when your roots look like you're ready to be cast in a school play about George Washington. If you have brown hair, you know the struggle!
But no worries! Today I'm sharing my best tips to stop white cast from dry shampoo:
Tip 1: Use a dry shampoo (or powder) that is made for brunettes--Batiste and Klorane make them.
Tip 2: But what if those aren't options? You can still use regular dry shampoo. Just be sure to shake and spray 8 inches away from your roots. I find that most dry shampoo directions don't say how far away to spray and 8 inches seems to be the magic number.
If you spray too close, you'll get white cast.
Tip 3: Short, quick sprays are key. This isn't hairspray. You need less product than you think you do. Think: Quick sprays from far away.
If you spray too much, you'll get white cast.
Tip 4: Once you have sprayed your roots (remember to lift up and spray sections in the crown too, not just the ones that frame your face), give the dry shampoo a minute or so to do its magic. And then get a towel and massage it into hair, just like you would if it was wet. Work that towel into your roots. You can do this with fingers, but I like using a towel--it helps get rid of extra product.
Tip 5: If you've followed all of the steps above you should be good, but if there is still visible residue, try using a brush! Don't forget to use a good clarifying shampoo to!
Tip 5: If you've followed all of the steps above you should be good, but if there is still visible residue, try using a brush! Don't forget to use a good clarifying shampoo to!
And that's it!

Such a great tip! Luckily my hair is more toward the lighter spectrum so I don't struggle with the white residue these dry shampoos tend to leave behind.

ReplyDeleteSo helpful! I always get white flakes and never know what to do about it! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThese are such great tips! My can definitely doesn't say spray from 8 inches away! Now I know! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is great- I'm a huge fan of dry shampoo but as a brunette always run into the visible white powder problem. I'm going to check out those recommendations for the ones made specifically for brunettes - thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI do not use dry shampoo.. This was very helpful though !!
ReplyDeletefor the most part I've found that dry shampoo and curly hair don't mix lol your tip using a towel is great, for straight haired girls! most instructions say to brush through..and curly girls can't do that either. I've tried the tresemme one meant for curly hair but it was just weird.
ReplyDeleteI just started using dry shampoo and love it!! I need to try this brand next! Have a great weekend!

ReplyDeletegreat tips! i'll be honest i havent tried dry shampoo before bc i was nervous about it leaving my hair white! xo jillian - stop by! I'm hosting a Turkish Towel giveaway on cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteThanks for these tips, Elle! I tried using a dry shampoo once and wasn't happy with it, but maybe I'll give it another try, taking your advice into account. Have a fun guacamole cook-off! I love any guac recipe that's super spicy.
ReplyDeleteI've been so hesitant on trying dry shampoo. Yet lately so many people have been suggesting and making it look like the best thing since sliced bread. (What am I 80?) I will keep your tips in mind if I ever take that step. (; Have a lovely weekend Elle.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite dry shampoo is Batiste too! I never thought of using a towel! Thanks for sharing your tips!

I received Klorane dry shampoo in my ipsy bag and it was the first time I'm using one. I had no idea how to use it at all so this is so helpful! Didn't know that short quick sprays are the best, will do that from now on.

I have never used Dry Shampoo but I feel like I should start!

Great tips! I hate when I see the white in other peoples hair, I want to go rub it in haha!
ReplyDeletewww.amemoryofus.com
Great tips for using dry shampoo. I do spray it 8 inches away but i didn't know that you should do short quick sprays. I totally use it like hair spray but will stop. Lol.
ReplyDeleteReally helpful tips! I use dry shampoo some times, but I can see I was doing it wrong, not even because of the white cast (never happened so far), but the finish. So I will remember to spray it correctly, leave and "towel-dry". Don't have huge experience with different brands - I use Kevin Murphy and really like it (and it's vanilla scented :) ) x
ReplyDeleteI think some products are better & worse for the powder look.
ReplyDeleteI've made myself almost grey haired looking one time with it that forced me to wash my hair anyways... defeats the point.
I actually used NYM's brand this morning, going on 3 day hair! Hehehe! Yes, short sprays only on the roots and give it a few minutes to dry.
ReplyDeleteLOVE dry shampoo - I use Kevin Murphy and its been the best for my hair! :) xx - www.GlamKaren.com
ReplyDeleteHaha! I spray so much and so close!! I'm glad I read this!
ReplyDeleteI hate the white after effect - great ideas for getting rid of that!
ReplyDeleteOk great post!! I love Klorane for Brunettes!! I tried Batiste but I did get that whitecast! I will try it again with your tips!! YAY!

Fab tips! I was taught to spray it away from my hair and it really makes a difference. Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo by Frederic Fekkai is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteRowena @ rolala loves
I def get the white cast sometimes but running your fingertips through your roots like you are massaging your roots def help.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions for a good clarifying shampoo? I love my dry shampoo and have no idea how I went so long without it! The Batiste is definitely my favorite. Dove makes a pretty good one too. It does the white cast but nothing a little brushing can't handle.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try the towel, I definitely struggle!
ReplyDeleteHaha, George Washington! So true. Thanks for the tips and the brands for brunettes!

The first few times I ever used dry shampoo, I definitely had the white cast issue. I later figured out it was because I was holding the bottle 2 inches from my hair. I have learned my lesson. I definitely need to get a formula that is made for darker hair.
ReplyDeleteSuch great tips…I don't use dry shampoo very often so I need to try it more often!

That 8 inches away is a great tip, Elle:) The first time I used a dry shampoo, I put it right against my roots...not a good look! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing

Great advice! I have brown hair and the residue sometimes makes it look grey at the roots.

I totally would like the try one made for brunette hair. I like the dove one because it doesn't leave a white cast. I will have to try the tip with the towel!
ReplyDeleteSuch a simple but great tip that I had never thought about before. :) Thanks for sharing. x

Genius Elle! I can totally relate. I will have to definitely try the 8 inches and the towel tricks because I know I can buy brunette dry shampoo but my favorite Batiste scent in the Brit one, and that's white! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteBatiste is my favorite dry shampoo! I try to grab it from TJ Maxx since it is only $5.99 but they are always out of the brunette one when I am there. I have never tried rubbing a towel through my hair! Usually I just use a brush and my fingers, but I am going to try a towel next time! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial! I always hate having a white cast from dry shampoo. What's worse is not realizing it until I've ran out the door.

Great post! Such helpful tips - for me especially as Ive been a doing all wrong!!
ReplyDeleteSportsanista
I haven't had the whitecast problem, but I do get stuck with that dry shampoo scent all day. It doesn't smell bad, but it is a reminder that I didn't wash my hair that day.
ReplyDeleteI am the WORST with dry shampoo so thank you SO MUCH for these tips! I recently got the Bumble & Bumble brunette - beaucoup bucks - and I didn't like how heavy it was...maybe it wasn't the spray, maybe it was ME! LOL But I'm glad you shared a couple other options for dark hair that I can try.

These are great tips! I use dry shampoo fairly regularly and I never knew how to keep it from showing...now I'll remember to hold it farther away and towel it off after!
ReplyDeleteI have this problem all the time & I've figured out spraying quickly and further from the hair. I haven't heard of the towel solution and I don't know that I'd want to use a towel but it does sound like it would well! xx, Ada
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! Thank you for the post missy.

haha love this because us brunettes look like dandruff central when we use dry shampoo! I have for sure been treating it like hairspray so thank you so much for this tip!

Dry shampoo is a definite must-have! I don't know how I ever lived without it!

I usually just brush the dry shampoo through my hair, but now, I want to try using a towel to massage it in :)
ReplyDeleteI never tried dry shampoo before but would need to!

Certainly good tips for those who use dry shampoo!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! When I dyed my hair dark brown I had such a hard time with dry shampoos.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast at Gracey's
I've never heard of this at all. Do guys use it?
ReplyDeleteI recently got a dry shampoo in a Birchbox shipment; so, this is timely. Would never have thought to use a towel and massage the dry shampoo into my hair. Great tips! T. http://tickledpinkwoman@blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteO my goodness this is so helpful!! Pinning for others to see too. As a mom, dry shampoo has become my BEST hair product. I've never used a towel afterwards. Even though my hair is blonde, sometimes the white still shows up on my hair. Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeleteI've definitely found that some dry shampoos (DOVE!) cause this worse for me than others (Not Your Mother's). I usually just try to brush it out, but I'll have to try using it from far away!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I love Batiste and use the dark version, but just end up getting dark grey cast instead of white. It goes away after lots of rubbing in and combing through, but I also definitely don't do short, quick sprays so I will try that next time!
ReplyDeleteThis is good to know! I used to have a hard time with the batiste ones, but I'm currently using one from Dove. I just didn't like the batiste one with the dark color tint to it. Since it would rub off throughout the day. I wonder if anyone else had this problem.
ReplyDeletehttp://emilymaiko.blogspot.com/
This has been one of my biggest pet peeves and why it took me so long to get into dry shampoo. I fell in love with Oscar Blandi because theirs sprays on clear. Never tried the towel thing... I usually just try to massage into my hair with my hands. I'll give it a go with the Dove dry shampoo I got that has been giving me major white cast.
ReplyDeleteVery nice article!! Thanks dear for sharing these tips for using dry shampoo. Anyways I want to use alterna shampoo and looking for some reviews. I wonder if you can provide some information!!
