How a Dermatologist Chooses Sunscreen For His Family--MUST READ + Giveaway

We need to talk about sunscreen. We all know we should wear it, but there are so many choices! It can be a little overwhelming--there is so much information and misinformation on sunscreen.

I'm inviting you to please watch the (very short) video below that answers those sunscreen questions we have. It also clears up some of the information out there. It is simple, concise, and clear.

The video, “How a Dermatologist Chooses Sunscreen,” features Dr. Joshua Zeichner, NYC board-certified dermatologist, where he shares how he shops for sunscreen as well as tips for navigating the *sometimes* confusing sunscreen aisle.

Something I love most about the video is that while he's a dermatologist, he's coming to you as a dad, a husband, that wants to take care of and protect his family. How does he choose sunscreen for his family? Find out in the 3 minute video below:

Need a little more convincing? Here are a few of questions he answers:
  • Which sunscreen is best for me? For my family?
  • How much sunscreen do I use?
  • How do I know if I'm using enough sunscreen?
One of my fav quotes from the video:
"When it comes to Labor Day, if you still have the same bottle of sunscreen that you have been using since Memorial Day, then you are not using enough."

The video is part of the Choose Skin Health campaign. Heard of #ChooseSkinHealth? It’s all about spreading the word about the importance of sun safety and creating awareness around skin cancer.

Today I come to you not as a blogger, but as a friend, a nanny. The information from this video is what I keep in mind when I recommend sunscreen to my family, to you, my friends, and what I use for those precious (and precocious) little girls that I take care of. I just want you to be safe in the sun both this summer and year-round.

PS: To make sure you are covered this summer, I am giving away sunscreen from Neutrogena, a brand I love and use. If you are interested, please watch the video, and leave your email in the comments.

This post is brought to you by Neutrogena.

  3. Thank you for posting this video! People don't realize just how important it is to wear sunscreen. Skin cancer is no joke. I wear sunscreen all the time even in the dead of winter.

  8. Thank you so much for sharing this, Elle. I have a high skin cancer risk and always try to educate others about their own risk. I am really surprised to hear that people would be concerned about the risk of using sunscreen as opposed to the risk of getting skin cancer, and I'm glad this doctor is taking the time to educate people and have the conversation. htwalrath@gmail.com

  9. What a great video! It's nice to hear what a dermatologist has to say about sunscreen.

  10. I watched the video and as I have sensitive skin, I will make sure that from today on I buy mineral sunscreen. I loved this post. There was skin cancer in my family and we all have to protect our skin. I mean, in my family and all, I mean, all the people. It hurt me very much when a "friend" (not really) loves to compare what she thinks "how white she is" and I have the same color and she says "you are not as white as me" - not only it is racist - if she is so proud of her color, OK, but why? It's insane, but I told her that my concern is not in being white, or yellow, or afro, but to avoid skin cancer, as I had that in the family. She doesn't understand it, but I hope other people do. Sunscreen is so important! Loved your post!

  17. I always thought using over SPF 30 wasn't worth it because it didn't work any better since that's what I've been told. Great informative video!

  18. Sunscreen is very important. I know some people think since my skin is already olive and a bit dark they think I don't need sunscreen but that is not true. Sunscreen is vital for everyone when being out in the sun. My email is perezashley60@hotmail.com

  23. When I was in high school I HATED how pale I was and just wanted to lay in the sun all summer (never went to a tanning bed though--my mom would've killed me and I just had no desire to). Now I rock my pale skin year-round. :) And always wear sunscreen!

  24. I used to lay out in the sun (with BABY OIL ON) and I went to the tanning beds all the time when I was younger and I'm kicking myself for it! Now I'm all about sunscreen even when we're outside and it's cloudy. I don't care how pale I am anymore! tobin.kimberley@gmail.com

  25. Such a sage and important message! Years ago, I wasn't wise in how I treated my skin. I've done pretty well in the last 20 years or so. :) T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com

  27. I'm so glad that these ingredients are safe. I thought they were but have seen a few reports against them. While I was growing-up, sunscreen wasn't used like it is today. About 8 years ago, I had 20+ pre-cancerous spots removed from my upper arms, back, and stomach. So scary! So, yes, I use sunscreen today. Thank-you for this informative video. :) natorama99@yahoo.com

  29. Preach! I wear sunscreen all year.

I got lit up on my face earlier this summer - my sunscreen went bad! I felt immediately aged and worse like I did a bad, bad thing. LOL

  32. Suncreen is so important! And I like what he said about the best sunscreen being the one you are actually using!

  33. This was a great video! I had read a list of the top 10 worst sunscreens and the 10 best and I was all confused because all my regulars were on the worst list. It is hard to know what you can believe or not about what is good and bad for us anymore, you know?? I mean obviously, you need sunscreen! But confusing as to what is best..natural or regular brands we have been using since we were little.

  34. Thank you for sharing this! All week I've been hearing claims against the Honest Company's sunscreens not providing adequate protection because they don't have the proper ingredients as listed in the video. The burn pictures from Honest sunscreen users are so scary!
