Story Behind the Pic: November

I have the two best jobs in the world.

First, is this one--I occasionally get paid to write about my longest and favorite hobby: beauty. I work so hard on it and I hope it shows.

Second, is my day job--I take care of two little girls, 6 years and 20 months. They are a handful and couldn't be more different. I work so hard taking care of them and I hope it shows.

Today's Story Behind the Pic is a little different--it's not actually a picture of a moment or an event, but of a drawing:

In case you can't tell, this is a picture of yours truly as drawn by the 6 year old. #nofilter ;)

Can we talk about my elongated neck, for a sec? And my black eyes smokey eyes? And the hair? I love it all, especially the rainbow. My fridge is decorated with her drawings from over the years.

"I made this for you. It's you," she said after wheeling over to the art table and handing the drawing to me. She's currently in a full-leg cast and uses a wheelchair (or grownups) until her broken leg heals.

It couldn't have come at a better time--she handed me this the day after my friend died. While she is aware of death, she didn't know of my latest loss.

It made me smile, but what she said next, really struck me:

"That's rain at the top. If you want a rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."

A common sentiment I've heard before, but in that moment, it really got to me. All of this "rain," all of these bad things happening this year to me, these losses and more, mean a rainbow is coming soon.

I can't wait.

  20. This made me a bit teary eyed. I'm sorry for your loss. The innocence and open-eyed wonder of young age sometimes has more profound wisdom than the wearied and heavy-lidded traveler.

  38. This is a beautiful story. Its amazing some of the grown up things kids say. I'm sure she had no idea how much she was helping you that day but that picture made all the difference <3

  39. That was so touchy, dear Elle, really so sweet and children are always so honest and wise, adults sometimes don't allow them to express themselves well. But you allow, and then this fantastic piece of sweetness and wisdom was revealed - really, I could cry now, no joke. After rain, yes, there must come some good.

  43. That story was so sweet. Children can have such perspective and clarity that us grownups lose due to the complexity of our lives. I'm glad that you have people in your life like this dear child to remind you that there will be rainbows to brighten our lives.
