Let's do something different--here's how I created this post by the numbers:
Liquid Lipsticks Tested: 23
Liquid Lipsticks in Today's Post: 10
Months Spent Testing: 3.5
Minutes Spent Doing Hair & Makeup For Pics: 30
Pics of Me in Hair and Makeup: 0 (went for just lips instead)
Hours Spent Swatching for Post Pics: 1
Pictures Taken: 14
Makeup Wipes Used for Swatching: 3
Makeup Wipes Stolen by my dog Charlie: 1
Hours Spent Creating This Post: 2.5
Isn't that crazy the amount of time that took?
I always find the behind-the-scenes stuff interesting, and thought y'all might too.
Now here's today's post:
Liquid lipstick? What is THAT? It sounds like someone melted a lipstick and poured it on your lips. Ok, just me? It's essentially lipstick in a tube (looks like a gloss) but it dries completely matte. It lasts for HOURS. Most of them are easier to apply than a lipstick and a lip liner is totally optional. It's a low-maintenance look--perfect for me to wear at work. It's a HUGE trend this season and will be still going strong well into next year.
Don't believe me? Kylie Jenner released her version of them on Monday. It sold out within minutes. I thoroughly tested 10 brands of them to find out which ones were worth the hype:
Top Row: Colour Pop, Kat Von D, Stila, Ciate, Anastasia of Beverly Hills
Bottom Row: H&M, The Balm, Dose of Colors, OFRA, NYX
Here are the swatches of the ones pictured above with info:
Top Row:
Colour Pop in Clueless:
- Shades: 43
- Price: $6
- Where: Online
- Scent: None
- Overall: light coats are best as it's sticky at first but dries quickly. For the price, it lasts a really long time without much transfer. This is a dupe for Kylie Jenner's sold out Candy K. Very matte.
Kat Von D in Double Dare:
- Shades: 28
- Price: $20
- Where: Online and Sephora
- Scent: None
- Overall: One of the first brands of LL I ever tried a few years ago. The formula is thick on this one and it's a great quality to a matte finish that isn't too drying. I have seen some separation on these after 2 years. Lolita is her most famous shade.
Stila in Rosa:
- Shades: 14
- Price: $24
- Where: Online and in stores where Stila is sold
- Scent: None
- Overall: Mousse-like consistency and some shades are very streaky. Shade matching is hard to do online, fyi. It lasts but it's not worth the $24 to me.
Ciate Liquid Velvet in Smitten:
- Shades: 5
- Price: $19
- Where: Online and Sephora
- Scent: None
- Overall: Very creamy with a demi-matte finish. This does have a lot of transfer but I love every shade I've tried. The tube is the smallest of those tested. I say skip it. I was wearing this on THIS post and you all LOVED the color.
Anastasia of Beverly Hills in Persimmon:
- Shades: 20
- Price: $20
- Where: Online
- Scent: None
- Overall: Very liquid-y in application. Gorgeous colors with a demi-matte finish. Some transfer if you apply too many coats, but so pretty.
Bottom Row:
H&M in Le Beau Monde:
- Shades: 4
- Price: $9.99
- Where: Online and in stores
- Scent: None
- Overall: I am really impressed with the revamp of H&M's beauty line. This is a mousse-like texture but dries to a pretty matte without being too drying on the lips. I didn't find it to last as long as I'd hoped.
Dose of Colors in Berry Me:
- Shades: 12
- Price: $18
- Where: Online
- Scent: Slightly vanilla
- Overall: I can't stand the applicator on these. It makes it very hard to apply. The color payoff is amazing. These are truly hit or miss with me. Sometimes, the color will be gorgeous and last all day (I'm wearing another shade in yesterday's post--click here to see it). And then sometimes it gets crumbly and transfers easily. I say skip these.
The Balm Meet Matte Hughes in Committed:
- Shades: 8
- Price: $17
- Where: Online and at Kohls
- Scent: Mint
- Overall: I got a tiny sample in an Ipsy bag and was hooked. This is minty on the lips--not as strong as a Buxom gloss--but noticeable. I really liked it.
OFRA in Laguna Beach:
- Shades: 37
- Price: $19.90
- Where: Online
- Scent: Slightest hint of vanilla
- Overall: My favorite brand of liquid lipsticks. These lasted the longest and wore the best. I think the packaging is my least fave of the brands, as it feels inexpensive.
NYX Liquid Suede in Pink Lust:
- Shades: 12
- Price: $6.99
- Where: Online and in stores where NYX is sold
- Scent: None
- Overall: I can't stand these. I get that they are a demi-matte (think creamy matte that's not too drying) but the transfer was awful and these were sticky on me. I got rid of them all.
Extra Elle:
- Haven't decorated yet for Christmas--I've been crazy busy. This is completely unlike me. But I have all of my shopping done, so yay?

I know you put a ton of time and energy in to your posts and I for one super appreciate it!!! You are my main go to for make up suggestions. I really love the color of the Colour Pop in Clueless and at the price I think that will be the one I try. I thought it was going to be the NYX one until I saw you hated it. Boooo!!! NYX can be hit or miss with me.
ReplyDeletethat's a lot of time, girl! but cool to look at by the numbers. good to know about stila - won't be getting that one. and kat von d is so rad that i may just have to try this one out! i'm a sucker for a name ha

Great review! I have one LL from the Sephora brand that I really like. I love how they look but I'm awful at applying any lip products so I'm nervous to try more!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post! Colour Pop are my favorite liquid lipsticks!
ReplyDeleteI love the Color Pop in Clueless, it's such a pretty color for a great price. So far the only matte lip gloss product that I've tries has been NYX matte gloss but I'd be curious to try out more.
ReplyDeleteAwesome review! You are legit - these details are great.
ReplyDeleteGIrl - You are set on every color out there, aren't you :)
ReplyDeleteI love the convenience of these.
I think you're winning - shopping done - now you can relax with the decorations :)
Great review as always!!
ReplyDeletegreat review! the photos are so helpful. xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI've only ever tried the Stila one. I have a few of the minis that showed up in my birchboxes. I'm not used to such heavy color, so I usually go light on it. One coat max. I'm very interested in trying the Balm one if you're hooked on it. Liquid lipsticks are very much my style too. I don't much care for liners and feel a little old for most colored glosses.
ReplyDeleteSO much useful information in here. I am a HUGE fan of Liquid Lipstick. seriously the stuff is amazing haha.

That is a lot of work into your post! Thanks for doing it for us. :) I have been wanting a liquid lipstick (because I'm just not great at lipstick application, and think this would be easier!). So I'll have to get an OFRA one! I've actually never heard of the brand before.
ReplyDeleteWow, you put in so much time and effort in this post Elle! Gooo girl!! It does not go unnoticed. I haven't tried too many liquid lipsticks, as I for one don't really like matte lip products. But I did like the tiny sample of Committed from The Balm...love the smell too!
ReplyDeleteWow! You are a hard working girl! I love the Balm cosmetics and heading to Kohl's so I need to check this one out. :)

Love the colours! I need to try out some of these♥
ReplyDeletesummerdaisy.net
I loved this post! I have tried alot too and def prefer colourpop. They are SUPER affordable and last pretty long. I like the KVD ones too but they are a little sticky for me and pretty expensive. Dose of Colors isnt worth the price either (in my opinion). I def need to try OFRA ones!
ReplyDeleteI still haven't tried any liquid lipsticks! I'd probably go for the colour pop ones. I've wanted to try Nyx too but I might skip those!
ReplyDeleteWow you put so much work into this and I always think of it as gloss. Never knew there was a difference, these are some great shades you tried! I really love the Ciate & OFRA shades!

I actually have a ColourPop and Anastasia liquid lipsticks in my post, love both brands but they are different colors. Love te behind the scenes info.
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for this post!! I love the Colour Pop ones the best. The NYX ones are awful and I got rid of mine too. I wore Ofra for the first time the other day and I liked it ok. It sort of crumbled off though. I ordered a Jeffree Star liquid lipstick on black friday and I can't wait to test it out. Love the behind the scenes info. I took quite a bit of time when I did my post too.
ReplyDeleteI think we all need to do these posts by the numbers more often. That was interesting and took a lot of time. I need liquid lipsticks in my life. I literally want everyone on the bottom collage. All are great colors.
ReplyDeleteHappy Hump Day!
Oh my favorite is Colour Pop in Clueless
ReplyDeletexx
I have a bunch of colourpop, a few KvD, one stila, a few ABH, one from TheBalm from ipsy, a few DoC, and a few Ofra. I'd have to say I really love all of them! I reach for the colourpop or the dose of colors the most tho. On my lips, I'd say the colourpop and ABH have a similar texture, and the KvD, The Balm, and Ofra have similar textures. DoC is kind of between the two. I've wanted to try the NYX ones, but I think I'll skip after reading this!
ReplyDeleteMan that's some dedcation! I love liquid lipsticks, though they are very new to me. The first one I ever tried was a NYX one years ago. I am 80% sure it was Tokyo. It looks awful on me. Streaky, scary pink. I didn't try anymore until Milani released their liquid lipsticks last summer. I fell in LOVE with Matte Lust and it's still hands down a shade I reach for multiple times a week. I also love Bumble and Beeper from Colourpop, but more so Bumble. Beeper is brown, and I'm iffy on how I think I look rocking the brown lip trend. (;
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing! I only have one of these kinds of lipsticks and you are right, they do last for hours! I just need to get used to how it feels once it dries on my lips, though.

I love the benefit one. Smash box has some good ones too. That awesome you got all your Christmas shopping done.

I'm surprised that the NYX didn't test well because I love all of their lip products. Now I know to stay clear of that one!

You worked very hard on this post! It's very appreciated too! I personally love the Kat Von D liquid lipsticks, but I also got theBalm's in my Ipsy bag and am now obsessed! It smells like mint chocolate chip ice cream to me. I really want to try the Ofra ones as well sometime!

Ohh, you just saved me some $$$ from spending on the NYX ones! Thank you for this list, Elle and this is the reason why you're one of the best and most thorough beauty bloggers out there!

congrats on getting your shopping done!
ReplyDeleteyou are amazing spending this much time on a post, not to mention it's a fabulous detailed helpful post! i don't think i have ever spent that much time, mainly because i don't do helpful things like you :) you've convinced me to try liquid lipstick! i like the look of the colour pop one, and the price :)
I used to find liquid lipsticks a little intimidating but the newer formulations are definitely easier to use. Thanks for your rundown!
ReplyDeleteLove this post and hearing about behind the scenes things! It takes so long to review a product properly. I think a lot of people don't realize that. Ofra is a brand I keep hearing great things about. I guess I need to place an order!
ReplyDeleteI love liquids... they're so much easier in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Elle! I haven't tried any liquid lipsticks yet, but I want to try Colour Pop and BH Cosmetics liquid lipsticks. That's great you have all your shopping done!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, you are amazing! Great review Elle! I know this took a lot of time! We are all so thankful for your beauty tips!
ReplyDeleteThese are all so pretty! I can't even pick a favorite! Love that they look a little more matte!

You are so thorough! Thanks for a great review! I've never tried a liquid lipstick, but they might have to go on my wishlist now!
ReplyDeleteWow! Good job on this post! Very thorough! So many of these shades are so pretty! I love liquid lipstick!
ReplyDelete~Sara
Sincerely, Sara
I tend to stay away from them, they remind me of glosses I used to use as a teen hahaha! Even though they're miles apart I can't stop but make the connection between the two. I have to admit I'm coveting Kylie's range, I'd totally convert.

I've only tried a liquid lipstick once when I got it in my ipsy bag. All of these shades are so pretty and I love the Meet Matte Hughes shade!

great post gorgeous shades
ReplyDeletehttp://weirdthoughts13.blogspot.in/
Wow... First of all, if it wasn't for you I'd always think of them as glosses (I really am not that up to date with new lipsticks :D ) And secondly, you deserve a plate of brownies (or equivalent) for all the work that's gone into this post! x
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this is awesome! I think I need to be sure to include some liquid lipstick on my Santa wishlist this year. Awesome post!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you explained what these were, I was clueless and would have just thought they were lip gloss if I saw them in a store! I love the look of the Kat Von D one the most--it's soft and pretty and not too matte.
ReplyDeleteThis is so great! Thank you for doing this review.
ReplyDeleteI have 6 of these liquid lipsticks and love them! I have yet to try the Anastasia one. Great post!!

I recently ordered the Kat Von D and Colourpop liquid lipsticks. I can't wait to try them! I've only ever tried the Stila liquid lipstick because I got a mini size in a Birchbox. I love the color and the scent, but I found that it transferred quite a bit and definitely did not last all day, so I can't imagine spending $24 on the full size even though so many people rave about them.
ReplyDeleteI really want to try Ofra, but I think I've spent enough money for the season haha
Hooray for having all of your shopping done! Hopefully you'll get a chance to decorate soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you shared some behind-the-scenes facts for us! Depending on the blog post, it takes me anywhere from 1-14 hours to put together. My Feminism 101 posts take the longest, because I research them very thoroughly and use at least 20 citations to outside sources.
ReplyDeleteThat's A LOT of lipsticks lol I've tried the Stila one and was impressed but it's SO drying. I also just got one in my Julep Maven box and was pretty impressed so I may be purchasing some more of these :) Thanks for the reviews!
