L'Oreal Lumi Cushion & Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation Reviews

I am so excited y'all are wanting more reviews! Today's two reviews come from my recent haul (it's right here, PLUS a video). These two new drugstore foundations recently hit the shelves and I couldn't wait to try them.

L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Buildable Luminous Foundation
  • $16.99
  • 12 shades
  • "first liquid cushion foundation"
  • available: drugstores and mass retailers, ulta

Cushion compacts are not a new technology--I've seen them in Asian beauty for years, but most of them are mineral makeup based.

This one is similar in that it opens with a sponge and then you lift the lid to reveal a saturated sponge.

It differs from its other compact counterparts in that the foundation is a thin liquid.

On your left, you will see the Lumi Cushion applied to half of my face.

You can tell the coverage is barely there.
However, the coverage is buildable, as you can see with the completed foundation on your right.

On the right pic, I am wearing concealer.

  • To apply this, I love using a brush. The puff sponge works but takes too long for me. Beauty blenders work well too, but I wasn't able to get as much coverage with them.
  • light-medium coverage
  • wear time on me was around 4 hours, with no powder
  • fresh, luminous finish
  • Best for dry and combo skin. I have dry skin, but I think this might break down on oily unless mattifying primers were used (fyi primer reviews coming soon).
  • Overall: If you want a light, natural-looking makeup, try this. I liked this because it gives me liquid foundation in an easy-to-apply way. Just dip and apply. I dislike the price.
Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation (Plus applicator, sold separately)
  • $10.99
  • available: drugstores, mass retailers, ulta
  • 12 shades
  • "A refreshing gel-whipped foundation that leaves complexion perfected and smooth with a velvety, soft-matte finish while skin stays hydrated for 12 hours."
  • Gel-whipped formula--it looks like a mousse

Just as before, on your left, you'll see the foundation applied to half on my face.

The coverage is instantly medium.
  • To apply this, I like using a sponge best. Brushes can leave marks due to the foundation's consistency.
  • Speaking of sponges, I also purchased the Dream Blender Foundation Blending Sponge for around $5.99. I hated this sponge. It it was too small and I couldn't get the sponge saturated to expand. There is also a different version of this sponge-on-a-stick at Bed, Bath, and Beyond from a different brand (please watch my video here to learn more about it).
  • medium coverage
  • wear time is around 6 hours, with no primer or powder
  • soft-matte finish that is hydrating and not drying
  • Best for combo skin, but oily skin should give this a try.
  • This product really soaks in, so I didn't like it on my dry skin as the day wore on, but it looks great in pictures.
  • There is dimethicone in this, which can break you out. I did get one tiny zit from one of the times I wore this.
  • Overall: This is a nice matte foundation that isn't too drying and gives nice coverage. Combo skin might like this.
Which one of these would you try?

Extra Elle:
  • I highly recommend the you-bake cinnamon rolls from Trader Joes!
  • I started getting messages from several of you wanting to know why I unfollowed on Instagram. I DID NOT. I had a couple of Instagram apps, like one for tags, and there was a new game on my phone, so I deleted them. PLEASE let me know so I can fix this! Sorry about that.

  4. I am definitely more about the light coverage, but that's too bad about the price! Thanks for the great review, Elle!

  11. Your reviews are so helpful! My skin is really dry in the winter so I think I'll try the L'Oreal!

  12. I was curious about the cushion foundations! I haven't heard of them before. I like a lot of coverage but I can see how they would be nice for a light coverage and natural look. I wasn't a fan of the Maybelline one, mainly for the wear time on my skin and it might have broke my face out!

  13. Girl you have such flawless skin. Both of these sound like good foundation.

  14. That sponge brush is what intrigues me... reminds me of Aladdin :) (Sorry, Disney is always on my mind)
I do love the coverage on it though - almost looks like an airbrushed makeup

  15. The first product is intriguing but at $17 that's a little steep for something that is just decent, especially considering it's not very long-lasting on the face. Thanks for taking the time to review these items, I really appreciate the honesty in your reviews!

  16. The coverage is great, I really like how you show a before and after photo... and one side of the face with a light application. I have never heard of this type of foundation!

  17. I haven't tried either of these by the Dream Velvet foundation interests me more however the ingredient that causes break outs kinda makes me a little hesitant to try it.

  18. What?! This stiff is going for $17?! That's insane to me. I mean, I love L'Oreal and everything, but their prices are starting to be less appealing to the drugstore label. I dont think I would like a cushion foundation, but it looks amazing on your skin!

  19. I appreciate the reviews! I like the idea of the cushion foundations, but the light coverage doesn't seem to be worth it for the price to me.

  20. I want to try all the new foundations at the drugstore but my sensitive, acne prone skin just won't allow it. I think I would love the Maybelline one!

  21. Great reviews (as usual)! I think I may try the L'Oreal if I find a coupon or cartwheel discount (that price is steep!) because I like a lighter coverage. However, I'm tempted to try the other one too, just maybe not in winter when my skin is drier.

  22. The Dream Velvet looks fabulous! For the price, I would definitely give that a try over the L'Oreal!

  23. The second one you can really tell from the half application! Definitely would be my pick of the two!

  24. You have such great skin Elle! I am super oily, so I don't think either of these would work for me. G

  25. Thank you so much for the review Elle. They both look amazing on you but thanks to your testing, I know now that neither one is for me!

  26. I'm so glad you reviewed the Lumi Cushion. I've been curious about it since I've been using Asian cushion compacts for awhile. I love their portability and buildable coverage.

  27. Im loving these! The second one gives you a beautiful finish!

  28. I have never heard of either of these. I feel like the first one wouldn't be near enough coverage for me but the second one intrigued me until you said it gave you a little zit once. I love your reviews, you are so thorough and tell me everything I want to know!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, thanks for reviewing these! I so want to try the Loreal foundation but I can't believe how expensive it is...for a drugstore product at least!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The second product seems more my style. If I'm paying for the coverage I want it to be there immediately.

Now I want cinnamon rolls for dinner.

  31. I've never heard of these, but the second one sounds great! I can't believe the price of the first one.

  33. Thank you for the review, Elle! My only problem about cushion compacts is possible bacteria growth inside the spongy part. x

  35. Did you like one better than the other? I've never tried a sponge foundation before, but my skin is combination leaning toward dry a little and so powder foundations do nearly nothing for me. Might try that first one out! Happy new year, by the way, lady!

  36. Have heard amazing things about the new L'Oreal cushion foundation. I still haven't seen it in the UK but will buy it as soon as it arrives here.

  37. Thank you so much for reviewing these, Elle! I was curious about the cushion but don't think it will work for me. The Velvet one though? That could work! Thank you again so much for the thorough review and helpful pics! Much love! <3

  38. Thanks for the review! Your skin looks so perfect with both! I will have to check out the dream velvet. I love the matte finish! And now I want cinnamon rolls.

  39. Thanks Elle! I can't use anything with Dimethicone in it either. Can you recommend a foundation you love that doesn't have it in it, please?
