Nails Inc Paint Can: Worth the Hype?

Y'all know I am instantly delighted when I see the word "new" on a product, and I felt this a few months ago when I heard Nails Inc was releasing their Paint Can product. There was so much hype around it--have you heard about this? It's a spray on nail polish. Sounds fun and easy, right? I immediately ordered a couple of cans for myself. After much testing, I'm here to report my results:

Where Can I Get It?
How Much?
  • $12 1.3oz
How Many Shades?
  • 3
How Do I Use It?
  • Nails Inc insisted that a top/base coat had to be purchased from them, so I did just that. Apply a coat of the clear base /top coat and allow to dry.
  • I found that while that was necessary, you don't need this particular brand of clear coat. Don't fall for it!
  • After shaking the can, apply several inches away a spray on the nails. This works just like spray painting anything: short sprays, thin coat. One coat is all that's needed--I tried combining the two for an ombre effect, and it ended up being too thick. I would suggest turning the finger as you spray.

Here's what it looks like after. Mine looks a MESS because I was trying to get a good angle for the gif above.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Seal with the clear coat and allow to dry. The website says the top coat is optional and gives up to 4 days of wear. I never made it that long.
  • Wash away the excess around nails with soap and water.
Here's the after. It's a bit shinier than is showing up here (it is shimmery), but more of a demi-mate or satin finish with the top coat.
How Long Does It Last?
  • It really varies--sometimes it's an hour and sometimes a couple of days. If you do a thick coat, it will peel right off.
  • Removal is very easy. No soaking in acetone or anything like that is needed, just regular polish remover.
This spray can got me thinking it was similar to other spray on products I own, so I tried some variations, like dry shampoo (nope), root hiding spray (sorta), and colored hair spray (closest):

I remember trying this as a kid as one of my "inventions" of nail polish, (I didn't use a top coat then so I remember it coming off easily) and having it not work. So I used the Nails Inc base coat, then sprayed a little of this temporary hair color.

The ingredients are different, so it is not the same product, and this gives a matte finish. It doesn't last long AT ALL because there is acetone in it as one of the main ingredients. Note: I contacted an aerosol expert and she said while this is obviously not the intended use of this product, it should be washed off skin just to be safe and don't ingest it (obviously).

But back to the Nails Inc Paint Can: Is It Worth the Hype?
  • It was fun to try, and clean up was very easy, but I prefer the finish and lasting power of other polishes.
Other Info?
  • This product is extremely flammable and I kept things ventilated, although it wasn't listed as a precaution. The scent wasn't bad and it dried quickly.
  • Not sure if you can tell from the gif, but the paint didn't get all over the place, like a spray paint can. It didn't get on my clothes or bedding, etc. It washed off easily from skin.
Would you try this?
Are you drawn to the latest beauty products like I am (someone please say yes)?

Extra Elle:
  • My weekend flew by--Saturday I drove 5 hours back home and spent a couple of hours with my brother and his girls. The youngest is 4 months! They live in VA, so I haven't seen them in nearly a year. It was my first time meeting my youngest niece.
  • I did a little bit of beauty shopping too and shared a travel beauty tip on my Snapchat--did you see it?

  1. I've never even heard of this, it looks so interesting and very impressed that you can just wash the access away. I am the worst at painting my nails. that's why I'm so fascinated with yours!

  2. I hadn’t heard of this, but it’s really interesting! It would likely drive me crazy if it started peeling a few hours after applying it though.. that’s my favorite part about gel nails — longevity!

  3. This looks so interesting - I have never heard of it! So fun that you got to see your family this weekend. That's always a great time.

  4. That sounds like such a fun and interesting way to try nail polish. I don't know if I'd give it a try though, especially since you said that you liked original formulas better.

  5. I'm not sure I'd be able to cope with the spray...it sounds like fun, but I'd mess it up LOL! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  6. I have never heard of this but love the idea of how easy it is. Bummed that it doesn't have a good finish but maybe I will try soon. Have a terrific day Elle!

  7. This sounds like a fun product to try! I love that you just wash the excess away but I'm not sure if it's for me. I'd be worried about it peeling off right away. Have a great week!

  8. I saw a video this past week about it & she liked it but never said how long it lasted. I think it would be fun for teenagers to do... but the idea of fumes freaks me out a bit... aint gonna lie :)

  9. I saw these in Sephora last week and was so tempted to pick one up. I'm glad I didn't and I think I'll pass on it. I'm sure it was fun to test and will be good in a pinch. I saw your travel beauty tip and thought it was genius. You have the best ideas!

  10. oh that's super interesting. i've seen the spray before but that's lame that it doesn't last too long. i know it'd come right off my nails! good review though!

  12. I've never heard of this! It seems like a fun idea and easy but if it only lasts a short while, definitely not worth it! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  13. I've seen this at Sephora, and it honestly just seems so ridiculous to me. I mean, nail polish in a can? The clean-up, while easy, sounds like a pain. I'll stick to regular nail polish myself. :)

  14. Yikes. I will file this product away with foundations that come in a can. haha I am insanely messy on my own, this would probably be bad news for me. Sucks that it doesn't last very long. I am all about my long wearing nail polish.

  16. I watched Tati review on this and the finish was horrid! I think I'll stick to normal nail polish, thank you very much.

  17. I was curious about these, but now I think I'll just stick with regular nail polish. The amount of time you spend off wiping off the excess, probably evens out with just applying the regular kind. I always appreciate your honest reviews.

  18. I've been wondering about these products, and it's good to know that you prefer the finish and lasting power of traditional polish <3

  20. You had a busy weekend! I hadn't heard of this, but I think it could be fun every once in awhile as a novelty activity. I agree with you that I prefer the lasting power of regular nail polish, which reminds me I need to paint my toes!

  21. I just couldn't get into this product at all and I had the worst time with clean up both times that I tried it! I like the hot pink color much better than the pale pink that I got, but I don't think I'll be trying these again anytime soon, ha!

  22. I'm glad you got to spend time with family over the weekend, how fun to see your new niece! This does sound like a fun product to try, but it sounds like for $12 it's not really worth the mess.

  23. These look so scary to me, I know I would make a huge mess. I would like to have a go though x

  24. I haven't seen this stuff before but I don't think I would like having to clean up the mess after spray painting. For all the effort you said it doesn't last as long as regular polish so while I think it is totally fun, I will probably skip. So glad you got to spend time with your family!

  25. Thanks for the review! I think I still want to try it, just to see, but I don't see myself switching from regular polish completely!

  27. I've never heard of this before! It's a cool concept but I think I'd be annoyed at having to clean my hands afterwards lol!!

  28. Looks very interesting concept. I guess still some improvement in nail spray quality is highly needed. Nice and honest review dear.

  29. I am also drawn to the latest products! but my budget does not always allow me to get them, so I have to give them a very good thought and wait. Thank you for this review, I now think I won't be getting any of these. In fact I don't really see the point of this product? Whatever!

  32. This is so interesting to me. I am glad you tried it out but I will stick with my regular polish!

  33. I hadn't heard of this before! I wish it had been Earth-shatteringly great, because that sounds so much easier than painting! Does it get on stuff when you spray it and ruin it? I'd be nervous that I'd get it all over the carpet/counter/floor/shirt etc and then it would stain!

  34. Interesting. I would just think this would be the biggest mess. I am sure my daughter would love it, too since it is messy! Haha. I am amazed at how well it washes off your skin with just soap and water, too! I bet it was fun to try it!!

  37. SO glad you reviewed this! I saw this on facebook and have been wondering about it. It sounds really interesting, but I want something that is going to stay on a bit longer. It's such a neat concept though!

  38. Fun! My daughter would so want this.

  39. This does look like a lot of fun! I'd probably try it for the novelty, but I think that I would also prefer my normal polishes, haha.

  43. I've never heard of spray nail polish so it was great to read your review despite the negatives. If it worked a little better than you described I would completely be sold on this as I'm a mess when it comes to real nail polish :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I've never tried this product, thanks for doing this review! The concept of a spay polish sounds really interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  45. That was really nice to read, because last year I wanted that and it was sold out. Then I forgot and now I see it again and with your great review. Well, the lasting power varies, so I don't know whether I should buy it - nevertheless, I would like to try, so, yes, I should buy it :) I liked the color on your nails, but if they had more options (I know they had 2), would be nice. I think it's nice as a novelty, but the "normal" nail polishes will remain :) It was great seeing it here!

  46. I think I'm going to give it a go! Sounds a bit disappointing and gimmicky, but I think for the price, it's worth a shot! Thanks for the review :)

  47. I JUST saw an ad in my sephora email about this stuff! you are so ahead of the curve, i didnt even know this existed. anyways -- looks interesting, but with all the washing you have to do it almost looks like more work than traditional nail polish. xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  48. Oh, I remember this one because there was quite a bit of advertising over here. I think the idea is good, but still prefer an old-fashioned "paint job" with a brush. :)

  49. Awesome review! With 3.5 kids at home it's hard for me to find the time to paint my nails. I was super excited about this and even told my 5 year old daughter about it! After reading this though, I might just stick to the old fashioned way. Or maybe it's worth a shot! :)

  51. I'm glad you got to enjoy some family time! It's hard living far away from loved ones. :(

As soon as I saw these cans online all I could think was "that doesn't seem like enough product for the money!" I would rather get some nice polishes and take the time to do a nice manicure. It's one of my little indulgences. But I do agree that seeing something "new" kind of makes you want to run out and try it, just for the fun of it! :D

  52. I wondered what the spray-on nail polish was like. Glad you tried it out! Now I know I probably won't give it a shot if it doesn't last very long. :)
