Take today's post, which is all about color-changing lipsticks. These have been around forever--I'm sure you can remember them from your childhood or if not, you've heard of them before (Tangee from the 70s or mood-changing lipsticks). I can remember one from my Grandmother's makeup line as a kid in the 80s. As an adult, I remember Smashbox's O gloss.
There are a few new ones that are out, but the "magic" is still the same for most (thanks Wikipedia): Red 27, a red dye that is actually colorless with it's dissolved in a waterless base, until it comes into contact with moisture and changes due to the pH causes it to turn pink. That means generally, no matter what color the product is, it will turn pink. The shade of pink looks different on all of us since we have different complexions, but the color is the same. Swipe the shade on paper and add water. It will change. Most of these have that dye.
Let's check out some of the past and present.
Lipstick Queen Frog Prince
- $25
- Ulta, online
- Comes in lipgloss and cream blush as well. For darker skin tones, try the blue Hey Sailor
- Applies clear
- Takes a long time to change color

The next one had people losing their minds online. It's a clear lipstick with gold flecks, dried flowers, and it changes color. I know when I mentioned it on my blog's Facebook (you should "like" the page. I post TONS of beauty and lifestyle-related stuff on there) it was my most popular post of the month.
But this product is sold out! And ridiculously priced ($30), so I found knock off versions on Ebay and Born Pretty store. I went with the latter to get it here quicker. FYI: No matter what color you choose, they will ALL be pink on the lips. Don't be fooled!!

- $2.99
- Born Pretty store, Ebay, or check Kailijumei
- If you order via BP, you are sent a random shade and there is no flower. Mine is clear.
- Color takes a little time to change.
- Very, very moisturizing.
- $2.99, but you can find these at cheaper prices
- Look for these at beauty supply stores, dollar stores, Born Pretty
- I had to throw it back to a classic! I bought a bunch of these a few years ago when I was trying to figure out how to make my own color-changing lipstick.
- This was the brightest pink and changed instantly. Lasted ALL day.
Maybelline Baby Lips Glow
- $4.49
- Ulta, drugstores, online, box stores--this was just released, so try online first
- This was instantly pink and didn't really change color, and was the faintest in pink shade
I am giving one Maybelline Baby Lip Glow away! Just make sure you like my Facebook blog page and let me know in the comments you would like one of your own. Contest ends July 21.
Arm swatches starting at the top with Frog Prince, the Moisture one, the green one, and the Maybelline Baby Lips Glow. The arm swatches never got as pigmented as on my lips.
Fun trend to try (kids are fascinated by it)!

Do you remember color-changing lipsticks?
Extra Elle:
-Not much is happening in my life this week, other than it's one of my late night weeks. So let's talk about the blog. Tomorrow I'll be sharing a few new beauty products!
I remember the mood rings back when I was a teenager, but no color changing lip products. Thank you for the explanation what happens, I didn't know how it actually worked.

I don't remember color changing lipsticks - what a fun trend! I love the shade of the Frog Prince but the Magic Color seems to be the best of the bunch. I think I might have to try it!

I want all of them. The only one I {think} I have tried is the baby lips!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool post! Reminds me of my childhood. Thanks for sharing and love the natural look of them!

I remember all these colour changing gimmick in the 90s, remember the mood ring? LOL! I'm not jumping on this bandwagon and will just stick to normal lipstick.

Yes I remember the clear one with the flower too! It's a mesmerizing lipstick! They all look relatively the same so I don't think I'd give into this, but they are still pretty!
ReplyDeleteOh are awesome! I would like the baby lips glow one for me please thanks !
ReplyDeleteWhat is that magic?!?!?!!?
ReplyDeleteStuff like that makes me leary of "WHAT IS IN THIS?????" - I'm weird about ingredients. If its pure magic, then I'm in ;) haha
Oh gosh that's too funny how they all just turn pink! I think I had one of these when I was younger and thought it was super cool lol!! I love the way those clear ones look though!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried a color changing lipstick before but I love all the colors that you picked out!!! It would probably freak me out to put on something that looks green at first haha but its a fun concept!
ReplyDeleteA color changing lipstick sounds like so much fun! I also love that even though it just changes to a pink, that it will still look different on everybody based on their skin tone!
ReplyDeleteI saw something similar in a shop at the avalon, now I wish I would've tried it!
ReplyDeleteThis totally reminds me of those mood rings we all wore in the 90s! Love it!

Le Stylo Rouge
I've seen the ones with the flecks/flowers in them for a while now, and I really want them just because they're so pretty haha.
ReplyDeleteI think the concept is cool but that the colors don't change dramatic enough for me to want to buy them. The one with flowers and gold flecs is pretty though!
ReplyDeleteThese are so fun! I feel like all my younger teen girls would get a kick out of these!
ReplyDeleteFun post, Elle! Those flower ones are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cool! I'm up for trying a couple of them:) And I think pink will be flattering for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI saw Tati review thee color changing lipsticks but I do not see the point! The price tag is so high!
ReplyDeleteLove the review!

This is a fun series! I remember those cheap color-changing lipsticks from when I was a kid. They were fun then, but these days I need more color. Thanks for explaining how they worked. I didn't know that!
ReplyDeleteI have been seeing these pop up every where but have yet to try them out.

I remember color changing lippies from when I was a teenager and while it was fun then, I'm a little more practical these days. Thanks for the lowdown on these Elle! Quiet weeks are good :)
ReplyDeleteI've been kind of wanting one of those clear lipsticks! Good to know I can get a similar version elsewhere! I'd love a baby lip glow! I'm sure my daughter would get a kick out of something like these!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried one of these before, but Magic Colour seems to be the way to go! Especially for that price.

I'm a child of the 80s and don't recall color changing lipsticks. Clearly I was living under a rock! lol I loved reading your reviews and finding out that there are some great options at a low cost. I'm particularly a fan of the moisturizing ones.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I so remember that Smashbox O one. Such a big deal when it came out, but yeah....these lippies have been around forever. Those ones for $30 tho....wut?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI used to love mood lipsticks back in middle school but not so much now. If I want a pink lipstick I would just rather buy a shade that I like. But I will say that the clear ones are super cool looking!!!
ReplyDeleteOf course I remember these haha! I used to rock them back in the good times! Love the Maybelline Glow one, looks beautiful on the lips.

I bought that Frog Prince one last summer! I love how moisturizing it is but you are right, it does not have a whole lot of color. It's perfect for everyday, I-don't-want-to-look-too-done-up days though! :) Those clear ones are so pretty!

There's another brand called Santhilea London that makes one that's really nice and cruelty free! (: You can find them at CVS. It's one of the green ones. (:
ReplyDeleteI remember these! I kind of want to try one of the cheaper ones, just for fun. (And I'd love to win the Baby Lips too--already a FB fan :) )
ReplyDeleteI have never tried one but now I might have to!

Sparkles and Shoes
I just got around to trying my first one. I bought the elf lip balm that changes colors and I love it. My great aunt always wore green lipstick and I thought it was the coolest things when I was little. I just saw that Maybelline had one out, but I'm addicted to my elf one. The lipsticks with the gold flecks sure are pretty!
ReplyDeleteAlready following you on Facebook! I would love to try this!
