Here's why you need one:
- lightweight (hello, summer temps)
- concentrated, but gives coverage like a foundation
- made for dry and oily skin types (just find the right one)
- added bonus of skincare ingredients/benefits
- "no makeup-makeup" or "airbrushed" are common in serum foundations
- some have SPF
- pricey, but you only need a drop or two
You know those concentrated detergents, where you only need a little? This is kind of like that--you only need a couple of drops to get lightweight coverage.
To apply:
- Shake it well
- Use a drop or two (depends on coverage level you want)
- Can be applied using a brush, fingers, or sponge
Sounds good, right? Here are a few to check out:
For combo/oily skin:
- Juice Beauty PHYTO-PIGMENTS Flawless Serum Foundation--combo skin and for sensitive skin
- Bare Minerals Bare Skin--Def for slightly dry to combo skin--I swear I am the only person who likes this stuff!
- Kevyn Aucoin--oil-free but yet luminous coverage
- Dior Nude Air--Talc-free
Dry Skin:
- No 7 Airbrush Away--Get this at Target or Walgreens.
- Josie Maran Matchmaker Serum Foundation--Made with argan oil and works to match your foundation
- Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum--Easy to build up coverage
- ELF Foundation Serum--Love how this looks on me, but it does break me out if I wear it every day. But only $8
- Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation--SPF 40 and helps to give look of tightened skin
Have you ever tried serum foundations?
Extra Elle:
Some good news after the not-so-great stuff lately: Over the weekend my Pinterest reached 10k followers and my Bloglovin reached 3k! Thank you if you've followed!
Found a tiny secret park that's dog-friendly in my neighborhood. Charlie and I are making plans to investigate further.
Yes! I've been looking for one.of these for so long! ;)

I love that you compared them to concentrated detergent, it totally makes sense! They sound perfect for summer! Have fun at the park!

With all this hot weather, these serum foundations sound amazing! I used Bobbi Brown foundation for years (just recently switched) and I was wondering about the Intensive Serum Foundation. Love that it is SPF 40 for my fair skin!!

Thanks for the scoop on serum foundations. I want to try No. 7 and heading to Target today. Perfect timing!

I have some oily areas and I do love having a make up less look during the summer (when it feels like it could just melt off anyway in the humidity!). Thanks for sharing this, I need to look into these!

I have wanted to try No. 7!
ReplyDeleteI love Bare Minerals Bare Skin thanks to a video tutorial and review from you some time ago. I bought a bottle after watching your video and just had to replace it last month-I think over a year later! I have a pretty oily tzone and normal cheeks but I'm currently loving applying Rimmel's matte primer under the serum in my T zone and then using NYX matte finishing spray to make it last through a sweltering daily heat index of 110* Arkansas summer.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on reaching that many followers, Elle:) XOXO
ReplyDeleteAnd I've been dying to try that KA one. I really love that line.
I have never tried this, I will have to pick one up. Congrats on your follower milestones! Enjoy the dog park, hope it is really a gem!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried a serim foundation before! That's good to know that there is some for oily skin too. I've been curious about the Shea Moisture one, but I really just think I wanted to try their makeup and that's the only foundation they have. Not sure if it's good or not. I'll have to try one of your recommendations first!
ReplyDeleteThat surprises me that not everyone loves Bare Minerals - that would be the one I would try
ReplyDeleteLook at you, gettin' those followers! :) Happy for you, lady!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the Bare Minerals serum foundation- it blends beautifully!

I tried the Bare Minerals because you liked it so much and I didn't like it at all!!! It made me look greasy and wore off really fast. I just switched over to the Loreal Infallible Pro Matte that you also reviewed and like it a lot better. <3
ReplyDeleteNice post :)
ReplyDeleteI am in love with your blog :)

I haven't had luck with the serum foundations that I have tried but I am more on the combo/oily side. Maybe I can get a sample of the higher end ones. Congrats on reaching those numbers on Pinterest and Bloglovin'!
ReplyDeleteI am super interested in trying that Bare Minerals one! Congrats on the Pinterest and Bloglovin' followers.
ReplyDeleteLove hearing about different foundations for different skin! I have super oily skin so the Dior one might be good for me! I have been using Estée Lauder double wear and it's been amazing helping with my oiliness and it staying in place!

I over got on with any serum foundation I applied, they all were too luminous in finish for my liking.

I love Bobbi Brown Serum foundation and have been thinking of getting Dior Nude Air...first, I need to save me some money. Good to know that you approve the e.l.f one, Elle even though it breaks you out if your wear it everyday. I might just pick that one up to try.

I loved Bare Minerals Bareskin but ended up switching because it does not travel well. It would always leak on me no matter what I did and for the price it was so frustrating. And the brush was super hard to clean. But the coverage was awesome. I will need to try another of these next time to see if they work a little better!
ReplyDeleteAs a oily skinned girl I haven't found a serum foundation that I love yet. I think they are wonderful for dry skinned girls though for sure.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny about Bare Skin, I LOVE it! Have been using it over a year and have no plans of switching.
ReplyDeleteI'm so intrigued by this idea. I may have to try the ELF or maybe the No. 7 to see if it works for me. I'm always in search of the best foundation!
ReplyDeleteI've only tried a sample of serum foundations here and there, but I really want to try the bare minerals. Glad it works for oily skin.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried a foundation serum before, but I'm curious! Sounds amazing if you only need a few drops.
ReplyDeletexo,
Angela
I don't use foundation currently but these serum formulations sound quite intriguing. I sometimes add a few drops of serum to my cushions for a more luminous finish.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried a serum foundation but i deff want to now!
ReplyDeleteI have never try a serum foundation before. Congrats!

I've heard of several of these, but the only one I've tried is the Bare Minerals. I did not like it at all. I am way too oily to wear it! A friend of mine raves about the Bobbi Brown serum foundation. Congrats on the milestones! That's awesome :)
ReplyDeleteI've tried the Dior Nude Air Serum and it's really fantastic! I also like the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea foundation.
ReplyDeleteBeaumiroir
I haven't tried any because my skin is HELLA oily...you'll see in my video tomorrow. I love that they have added skincare benefits to them as well. I'm currently trying out the It Cosmetics CC cream...perfect for "no makeup" makeup days...well, for me at least.

I loved your post! I like serums very much and I have one or 2 serums foundations, and yes, I found they are very good. But here I got to know more brands with serum foundations and I am now coveting the Bobbi Brown one! It's a brand that I like very much and what you said about the foundations sounds good to me! I want to buy it now!
ReplyDeleteDenisesPlanet.com
Love this! I've never ventured much into these types of foundations but I think it would be good for the summer months. Which one is your fave?
ReplyDeleteI've never tried a serum foundation before and have always been curious about the bareskin one. I have pretty oily skin, so maybe I'd try the Juice Beauty one instead. Thank you for the different options!

I've tried a handful of serum foundations and they are just ok for my combo skin. I really want to try the Dior Nude Air, but I just can't stomach that price. Another really lightweight, summer foundation is the L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion. I NEVER would have picked this up until I saw it on a fellow oily girl's face. It's so light and gives you a healthy glow!
ReplyDeleteYay for a new park; I am sure Charlie will enjoy scoping it out! It actually sounds like a serum would work well for me, so I will try the Bare Minerals one after I finish my powder.
ReplyDeleteWill have to try serum foundations next...! I just bought the Shu Uemura Lightbulb foundation for fun and I'm liking it so far, except my forehead look oily...!
ReplyDeleteI have that Bobbi Brown foundation on my "to try" list! xx
