I can't believe February is almost here--January, which is usually the longest month to me, just flew by. That means Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Not into chocolates or flowers? I've got just the right kind of sweet treat: DIY Macaron Bath Bombs! These are so cute and make a perfect gift or as a treat for yourself. They're really easy to make too! Enjoy.
Need:
1c baking soda
1/2c citric acid (available online and in stores like Whole Foods)
1/2c cornstarch
2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
2 tablespoons witch hazel or water
5 drops almond essential oil
10+ drops of soap colorant (try craft stores)
Molds for macarons
Do:
- Mix the dry ingredients.
- Mix the oils and soap colorant and add to dry ingredients.
- Stir until the mix turns desired color.
- Add a few drops at a time of witch hazel to the mix and rapidly stir until it has a mushy consistency.
- Work quickly, because if you add too much witch hazel at a time, your mix will bubble and fizz.
- Press into molds and allow to dry for a few hours. I usually do this over night.
- Pop "macarons" out of mold. Get them to stick together by adding some more of the bath bomb mix (add the witch hazel to make it into a paste). For these photos, I made a meringue, to give it more of the macaron effect.
FYI:
- I used sweet almond oil and almond essential oils to mimic the almond powder in macarons, but feel free to use your favorite oils and essential oils for scent.
- I prefer to use soap colorants since these won't stain hands or bathtubs like food coloring will.
- Baking macaron molds won't work for this--those are generally flat. I used some tiny half circle molds I've had for ages--these made about a dozen with plenty left over to make a large bath bomb. Try ebay or amazon for molds.
- I also use clear Christmas ornaments for bath bombs. Just be sure the molds are flexible, or you will need to pop them out of the molds after setting up for 30 minutes.
- Water can be used in place of witch hazel--it just makes it fizzier and I have to work faster. Witch hazel works better for me.
- Please be aware of any allergies or skin reactions before using or gifting.
