Easy Textured Beachy Waves for Medium Hair: Tutorial

how to get beach waves, medium hairstyles, brunette hair, wavy hair, beach hair

We've seen plenty of beachy waves tutorials, and nothing is more frustrating than when your hair looks nothing like the photo at the end. Today is going to be different because I'm sharing a few tips that actually work to get those windblown waves. If you have medium-long hair, keep reading! I'm going to be using the John Frieda® Beach Blonde™ Collection--this line can be used by ANY hair color.

You can find the collection easily at Target. If you're like me, you're in there weekly!

So now that you've got the products, let's get onto the tutorial. You'll need a curling wand and brushed hair. This takes me about 10-15 minutes.

AND clean hair! This is Tip #1! The Shampoo & Conditioner nourishes and adds texture and preps hair for styling. Both have a minty cool smell. The BeachBlonde Cool Dip Purifying Shampoo detoxifies for texturized beachy fullness while the Smooth Seas Conditioner rescues and detangles for soft touchable, texture.

You'll get the waves by using a curling wand. Not all of us have natural waves in our hair, so those of us who fit that description, try this! Once your hair is clean, dried, and brushed, divide it in half. Start from the back from one side and select about a section of hair about half an inch.

TIP #2: The Rule of Three
  • Think of your selected section (pictured above) as having 3 parts: beginning (roots to about ear level), middle, and ends. You want to start at the middle with the curling wand.
  • Place the wand in front of the section (pictured above).
  • Wrap hair around it twice. If your hair is shorter, once might do the job. Longer? Try another wrap around.
  • Leave out that last third--the end of your section. This gives it a beachy look and prevents it from turning into ringlets or "prom" hair.
  • Hold for 10 seconds and release.

TIP #3: Variety is Key
  • Now, take another section, maybe a little bigger or smaller than the last section of hair you just curled.
  • Place the curling wand behind the section and wrap around twice. Hold for 10 seconds.
  • By changing the section size as well as the direction of curl, it will look more natural. This is the number one mistake for beachy waves. Look at the pic above. I have 3 waves there. The middle section is different because it was curled "towards" the face while the other two were curled "away" from the face.
  • Now repeat for the rest of your hair, varying the size and direction.

TIP #4: Add Texture
  • If you've followed the tips so far, you shouldn't have tight curls but loose waves. Let's get those waves looking even more effortlessly undone by adding some tousled texture. Spray John Frieda® Beach Blonde™ Sea Waves™ Sea Salt Spray onto the waves. Yes! You can use this on damp or dry hair. Infused with natural sea salt this gives that piecey look. Plus it smells like coconut so you can have beachy waves all year. It smells SO good.
  • Then rub your hands through hair and kind of scrunch it to break up the waves, making it look even more natural and undone.

And that's it! Easy, textured beachy waves--perfect for any time of year.

  8. I had no idea John Frieda make a sea salt spray, I so need to get my hands on that. I'm sort of lucky, I have naturally curly hair and by the second day, my hair is pretty much just beachy waves. Some days, it does have a mind of it's own.

  24. These products sound so fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I love Target, so I'll have to pick these up next time I am in!

And I agree - curling your hair in two different directions is so important! Otherwise it doesn't look natural at all.

  25. You always make it look so easy...
for me, its knocking everything into the sink with the curling iron,
its spraying product into my eyes - it getting on the floor & making me slide. See, I just go with bad hair & stay safe :)

  31. I love nourishing shampoos, cause my hair needs it, it's dry. Your wand is better than mine, I think, it looks better! I must confess that for these cool waves I have to straighten my hair first, cause mine is already very wavy. If I do with it the way it is, it won't look as beautiful as yours, so I may try after straightening! I love your hair tutorials!

  36. Great tutorial, Elle! I love how you targeted medium length hair. My hair is definitely defined as long, but it seems most tutorials are for either long OR short hair. Never in the middle!
