Sweat-Proof, Swim-Proof, Water-Proof Makeup Tutorial

For many of us, summer makeup routines change to light, minimal makeup. But, sometimes an occasion (especially if pictures will be taken) arises where we need a bit more coverage--like weddings for example, and we need makeup to last. Today's post features products that are sweat-proof, swim-proof, and water-proof to get you through those summer months. Or pretty much year-round, if you live in the South. No, I don't wear makeup swimming, but I wanted to show how long-lasting this is. There's a video at the end where I go through everything step-by-step. Let me know what you think!

Face:
  • Spray a clean face with an oil-free makeup setting spray. I like Urban Decay De Slick, Skindanvia, or if it's for a wedding, I use Model in a Bottle. L'Oreal has a drugstore version I love. Allow a few seconds to dry.
  • Apply a mattifying primer, like the one pictured from LORAC and allow 5 minutes to set. My fave is from Makeup Forever. I don't really care for primers that have too much of a silicone-feel to them (like Smashbox) for this. A couple of drugstore hacks for cheap primers are Milk of Magnesia (shared here 4 years ago!!) or Nivea After Shave Balm.
  • Next is foundation. I used Rimmel 25 Hour foundation for liquid and light-med coverage, but I also love L'Oreal Infalliable for a bit more coverage. For super oily skin, try Estee Lauder Double Wear.
  • For concealer, try IT COSMETICS Bye Bye Under Eye. It's waterproof.

Next, it's time to cook or bake your makeup. This technique has been around for decades (think Old Hollywood) and has been used by drag queens for years. And now it's being heavily mentioned online, and that's because it works.
  • Take a loose powder and heavily coat under the eyes, the chin, the forehead (as pictured above). Allow it to set or "cook" while you continue with your makeup. I usually start my eye makeup while my makeup is baking. The longer you can leave it, the better.
  • Once set, wipe away the loose powder. You can also follow up with a setting powder, like DermaBlend. Rimmel makes a great setting powder as well.
  • Apply bronzer, like this waterproof one from Tarte. It came in this month's Ipsy bag. I usually skip blush for occasions like this since it's so hot and my skin naturally blushes, but Tarte is recommended again for their Amazonian Clay blushes.
  • Spray face again with setting spray. This helps to set and remove that powdered look.
Eyes and Lips:
  • While makeup is cooking, focus on the eyes. Rimmel makes great shadow sticks that are waterproof and last for hours. Take the champagne shade and apply to the lid. Use the bronze shade in the outer corner and blend using a brush. In the video, I did go over them with matching powder shadow.
  • For liner, try the waterproof one by Stila.
  • Curl lashes and use Tarte's Light, Camera, Splashes. Waterproof mascaras are not my fave, but I love this product. I also love Maybelline Rocket and Hard Candy has one that truly lasts for days.
  • For brows, fill them in with NYX Brow Gel--this is waterproof and affordable.
  • Now lips are completely up to you, but to make mine last I used Rimmel Provocalips. I mention several on this post for wedding day kiss-proof makeup.
Here is everything mentioned above in action!

I have tested this makeup in a variety of temperatures and situations.
Here's the makeup shown after swimming, after being in rain, about 14 hours of wear,
the beach, 106 heat index, and after playing outside with the kids at work for 30 min.

  21. This is a great post and very helpful for people that need tips for keeping their makeup in place all day. Especially on a muggy day summer day!

  22. I love the IT Bye Bye Under Eye concealer, though I haven't had one in my collection in quite some time. My life is a constant battle against sweat, so I love posts/videos like this. I've never tried Tarte's Light, Camera, Splashes but I find the original version to be quite budge proof (though I haven't gone swimming in it). :-)

  31. I've never heard of this "cooking" technique but I will definitely have to give it a try as we've been getting crazy heatwaves in NYC this summer and the city literally feels like a sauna at times. You're the best Elle!

  43. I haven't heard of cook/baking your makeup, but if drag queens do it I am on board. Thy always look amazing. I have only used the Mac Fix+ setting spray. I am always so worried brows will melt so I will have to check out the NYX Brow gel.

  44. I too am sooo impressed with L'Oreal's setting spray. Did you hear Hard Candy came out with one too? It's next on my list to try. I want to love that Rimmel 25 hour foundation sooo bad. Call me weird, but I love the smell of it. I don't know what it is, that super light perfume smell that most people hate? I've found it settles into my nose and mouth area. Today, I used it around the outer parts of my face, blended it down my neck, and went in with L'Oreal True Match Lumi for my problem areas. (: It's not perfect, but I feel like a few more times playing around with it and I'll love it!

  45. Hard Candy has a mascara tint that I swear lasts fofrickin ever! I have found that in Texas humid heat and a 12 hour shift this stuff doesn't budge. I hate mascara that sweats off and lands under my eyes, NOT a good look!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Does Rimmel have a loose setting powder or is it the Stay Matte pressed powder? And did you apply the setting powder with your beauty blender? I never though to do that. Is it any different than applying it with a brush?

I always applied the UD setting spray before my makeup and I've been trying the L'Oreal after. I may try it before too because the UD worked WAY better that way.

    Thanks for a great tutorial!
